No. The purpose is to give an opinion based on the quality of the work. It doesn't really matter whether the work will endure or not. No one giving an opinion should be trying to make it go away. They're just stating whether they found it worthwhile or not and, hopefully, why or why not. Ed Wood's crap has endured down the years, too; largely because it's so awful that it's become legendary (like "The Room.") That doesn't mean that people should refrain from pointing out that it's awful or that their opinions should be discounted simply because the movies will make a ton of money and will tickle the fancy of whatever seven-year-old might be sitting in the theater. "Song of the South" tickled my fancy when I was six, too. Does that mean that people shouldn't point out the blatant racism present in it, simply because it was available for decades (i..e lasted)?

Just FYI: A media analysis project at USC discovered that the bulk of the outrage/misogyny/racism coming from purported Star Wars fans on Twitter re: The Last Jedi could be traced to the same Russian bots used to affect the 2016 election. So, either some Proud Boys have gotten a deal from Putin's little trolls or someone thinks that Star Wars is an actual cultural wedge issue in the west. Weird.

Alright, so here's what I'd like to specifically talk about with respect to the new star wars. If you don't want to talk about star wars that's fine. Anyway, it's pretty spoiler-based so I'm going to use tags:

You’re not wrong. It’s a problem I have with it, too. Along with a whole lot of other things that make it feel like the trolls won.

Let’s say they kept that though.
Warning: Spoiler!

I’m going say one more thing and I’m done: The great setback of this trilogy was not going in with a plan. To make matters worse, they kicked it off with JJ Abrams, who I like, but is really great a putting cool ideas out there for other people run with but rarely do those people know what to do with them. I don’t think he does, either. Rian Johnson liked one idea that JJ put out there and that was Kylo Ren, the most consistent and most interesting character in this series. So what we ended up with was a movie of setup, a second movie undoing that setup and putting its own in place, and a third that tried to salvage those original ideas, play catch up and wrap everything up in time for the movie to end. If there’s going to be another trilogy (and I’m sure there will), they need a definite plan in place from start to finish. They should also stay away characters who have completed their arc (though Luke’s was really great in these). That probably means staying away from the Jedi.

I would like to see a sequel to Se7en where the mystery box contains the actual head of J.J. Abrams.

I agree with your assessment of the trilogy almost entirely, Josh, though I might have enjoyed them a tad less than you did overall.

I read someone bring up how the original trilogy was conceived in the romantic style, and the series was started before postmodern filmmaking really became the de facto standard everyone, including audiences, was used to. I think there's truth to that. When people (like you) say these movies are for kids, I think they're also keying into a series whose filmmaking was from a different time and mode and is having a hard time shifting gears (and I do think this most recent trilogy is trying to shift gears).

Abrams doesn't like having a plan. That's his whole schtick, and it ruined Lost. He is obsessed with having his mystery box approach to storytelling, which features a McGuffin that is deliberately left undefined until the end of the story. Sometimes the story is a long one and the lack of planning means that the mystery box is left either empty or holding a turd. This is what Abrams is known for, and putting him in charge of this Star Wars trilogy always meant a strong possibility of a disappointing ending. Abrams deserves blame, but so does Disney. Abrams is already rich, it would be nice of him to retire now and make way for some people with talent.

Dave Filoni should be put in charge of the Star Wars franchise in the way that Kevin Feige was put on for Marvel. His work on Clone Wars, Rebels, and The Mandalorian show that he has a better understanding of what makes SW work and where it should go.

Frankly, in retrospect, the best Star Wars material since Jedi has been Clone Wars, Rebels, and The Mandalorian.

I think you're selling the first two in this trilogy a bit short. They aren't solid gold but I think they stand with the material from clone wars, etc. What I will say the clone wars and rebels do well is balancing that line between genuine light hearted adventure stories and more complex fare, which the original trilogy hit on too.

Oh, I love TFA and TLJ, don’t get me wrong. But thinking about some of the better story arcs of those shows, Asoka, the more low key Mandalorian...that stuff is just as good as those films.

I still hold that in time TLJ will be regarded as the second best SW film.

I agree with that. TLJ was a big, ambitious swing for the fences. It didn't always work, and it was too damned long, and the casino planet sub-plot was pointless, but at least Johnson tried to do something different, and "kill the past" as Kylo Ren puts it.

Massively profitable Intellectual Properties simply don't change, and that's what made TLJ so crazy. I'm amazed that movie even got made!

I'm interested to see this general shift of new Star Wars content over to Disney+ instead of movies. I'm optimistic about that approach. I like the smaller scale, and the possibility to see new and creative voices in charge (I feel the same way about the slate of upcoming Marvel TV shows on Disney+). TV seems to be attracting all the best talent and attention these days anyway, so I think it's a smart strategy.

Star Wars is like comic books now. It’s too big, too many things to too many people and not all of it is going to be for everyone. I repeat, it isn’t going anywhere, and fans and passerby’s alike will have to adjust to treating them like comics. There will be many hands to come through and you won’t like everything. You do what you do with comics, you drop out for awhile and pop back in when there’s something new going on.

I have to wonder what kind of influence my unique entry point has on my taste in Star Wars. I’m in that weird age group who were not alive when any of the OT movies came out and I was old enough to recognize how disappointing the prequels were when they came out. The Thrawn trilogy, the West End sourcebooks, Shadows of the Empire and the Power of the Force toyline were “my Star Wars.” Michael’s comments about the scale of SW really put that into place for me, because my entry point was a time in which batshit crazy stuff really took center stage. I agree with Michael pretty much down the line (there were a few things he didn’t like that I *loved* and vice versa), but I was still entertained by it.

The comic book analogy is a good one...you know what also works. A buffet.

This movie was like a big buffet of Star Wars. Which sounds great! Except that just like a buffet, the overall quality is low and everything is presented to try to satisfy as many customers as possible. Some things are better than others. Some things aren’t for you, they are for someone else. Some things nobody asked for. Some things are standard fare. None of it is as good as a really good restaurant, and all of it was prepared well in advance so it’s all reheated for serving. At the end you get dessert.

The good thing is that because SW is so big, you can choose what you like. It does not have to be about the movies, which are going to do whatever without your consent or approval. But I think this movie really shows that SW at this scale can not be completely satisfying to -anyone-. Can you imagine writing this movie and thinking about all of the different groups you have got to please? It’s insurmountable.

I really think the future of SW is in the Disney + shows and I would be OK with there NOT being another theatrical film, let alone a “saga”. The smaller format, which allowed for all-in fan service, more experimental stories, granular explorations, and extrapolations on various concepts CAN please everybody. Maybe you don’t like the Mandalorian’s episodic structure and laconic Western style. Well then maybe you will like whatever the Obi-Wan show does.

TFA bored me once I realized that it was going to be approximately the same movie as the original Star Wars. I love that TLJ genuinely surprised me at times, but there were other elements that disappointed me. I didn't like that Kylo Ren and Rey were basically skyping with the Force, and I hated that jump-the-shark moment with Leia. The casino sub-plot was excessively long given that it was ultimately irrelevant. And there were significant plot holes involving the slow-moving space chase. My dissatisfaction with these first two movies in the modern trilogy made me decide to pass on the final movie unless it got great reviews.

I just got back from Star Wars. This movie was FUCKING BORING.

I enjoyed the light saber fights. The end.
