The Netflix original movies are definitely varied in quality. I thought Old Guard was average; I wanted to like it much more than I did, but it wasn't unpleasant.

I enjoyed 6 Underground and whatever the Hemsworth picture was called.

Sturgeon's Law is still in full effect. No reason Netflix would be exempt.

Watched The Platform on netflix last night.

It does a lot right, but then ruins it by hinting and teasing at something bigger, and ends up being a confusing mess. When the focus is on how the prisoners relate to one another, some haves and some have nots, it does a really good job and works quite well.

However, it is just a mess as to why people are in the prison and what the whole point of the prison is, and every time it starts to allude to that, it just gets confusing and hints that there is a bigger reveal to come, which never eventuates.

It would have been better with the focus more solely on the people and less on the system and why it is there. It is a good metaphor for the problems of capitalism when it works well, and it should have been comfortable just placing that front and center.

My girlfriend wanted to watch Highlander and man, this is a bad movie. I expected bad in a camp or cult classic sense. The kind of bad that has a charm to it. But no, it's just bad. It's long, dull and characters have the charm of a piece of cardboard.

It's pretty misogynistic too. Women spend most of the time yelling and being told to shut up. They get raped twice and they don't wear a bra in a couple scenes. It's pretty much the textbook example of women suffering to give a man a motivation. There's an homophobic scene too.

I just wonder, how do you make something so bad out of a such a cool pitch? There are immortal warriors. They are fatally attracted to killing each other. Only one can remain. That's cool. And yet, it doesn't even deliver on that. There are four immortals and three of them are just having a jolly nice team with each other.

Highlander is garbage, the entire franchise. It’s sleazy and cheap front to back and not in a good way.

Every couple of years I get obsessed with Phase IV, the Saul Bass ant movie. This is one of those times.

I’d say it’s underrated or decry that it’s not regarded as a classic, but it’s just too weird and artsy for that. It’s also really not all that cinematic- it’s like a Playhouse 90 or Outer Limits with lots of macro lens ant footage. But it is ambitious, telling a scope with an insane scope in a very small space with few players. The big ideas and events are all implied or surmised, not shown. So it creates this odd, contained atmosphere of uncertainty and horror.

It’s on Hulu but if you watch it, make sure you follow up by watching the original ending on YouTube. It goes full blown psychedelic. It is really a shame the studio balked at it because it’s a great finish

Doctor Sleep is a very worthy sequel to The Shining. I re-watched The Shining about 18 months ago, so it was still relatively fresh in my memory. But that wasn't really necessary, because The Shining is a searing, unforgettable story, and the original movie version was directed by Stanley Kubrick at his peak. I understand that King wasn't happy with Kubrick's choice to emphasize Jack's alcoholism, but I think that King eventually matured enough to conquer his own substance abuse problems and also give Kubrick credit due.

Anyway, Doctor Sleep reminded me of the experience of seeing Deep Purple in concert in 1985. They were touring to promote a surprisingly good come-back album, so they had to play a bunch of those songs. But that eventually gave way to more of a greatest hits set as the show went on, because songs like Smoke on the Water remained iconic. Likewise, Doctor Sleep tells a refreshing new story about Danny Torrance, with minimal reference to his traumatic past, then goes for the greatest hits in the final stretch. But it works great. The new characters are interesting, but respect is also paid to the legendary original movie, and the results are satisfying.

As a story, The Shining was the shocking work of a brilliant, young Stephen King. Doctor Sleep is the work of the King who has lived a full and interesting life, and has the patience to let a story breathe and unfold at a more natural pace. I haven't read the book yet, but I assume that this movie is a fair translation of the work, given King's long involvement with Hollywood.

Ahh come on, Highlander is fantastic. When viewed exclusively as a single film it holds up really well with good internal consistency, a full character arc for MacLeod, and just a lot of fun. Remember, this thing probably had a budget slightly larger than a TV show episode of today.

Yeah, women were threatened and prey to hulking man-beasts. This was true in 17th century scotland and it is true today. But Brenda was smart and a full character in her own right while Heather was the same within the context of her time. They both had their own stories, but we view them from the POV of Connor so naturally it is about his feelings for them and the peril he brings to all those around him. Ramirez was just as threatened and died for it. Heather would have died as well had Ramirez not lied about who she was.

About the only thing really off about the film for me is the weird Punisher clone in the middle. But then again, in the NYC of the 80's (and apparently, right now) that kind of thing was expected.

The Immortals were not inherently drawn to kill each other except during the Quickening. Some did a bit of preliminary rival culling, but otherwise they were good or bad based on their own nature.

Of course this all gets messed up with the subpar sequels (especially 2, WTF?) and the EU of the show (I ignore the anime entirely) but just the first film is pretty complete IMHO. The deleted scene version with the WW2 bit is nice as well.

Watched "Lost Bullet" on Netflix. French action film with some really good car chase scenes and some decent fight choreography wrapped around a somewhat obtuse and mostly meaningless crime macguffin plot. Still, it was a lot of fun even if it doesn't really make a lot of sense. I always like euro action films because they tend to reign it in a bit while an american/asian film will glory in the ultra-violence. Same here. This pulls short at that edge of action=>violence porn (6 Underground, I'm looking at you) and is better for it. There is a great scene where a character proceeds to beat up an entire police station and you actually kinda believe that he could do it because he shows the stress and pain.

Saw The Big Sick on Netflix with my parents. I had heard about it on NPR around when it came out but hadn't gotten around to seeing it until recently, but I heard so much by that point that I felt like I had... or maybe I had seen it with my ex and forgot. We liked it.

Anyway, it's an autobiographical piece about a Pakistani comic living and working Chicago. I don't want to give away too much but it's pretty funny and his girlfriend's parents are pretty entertaining. (The dad is Ray Romano).

This has been part of an ongoing comedy rabbit hole I've been diving in with my parents, which started with me showing them Jimmy O. Yang's stand-up after they saw Crazy Rich Asians. I showed them Hasan Minhaj's Homecoming King and some episodes of The Patriot Act. Jimmy referenced Ali Wong in his set, so I showed one of her specials too. Showed some Dave Chapelle, Yvonne Orji, and other comics too, including some white ones like John Mulaney, Neal Brennan, Taylor Tomlinson, and even Anthony Jeselnik (who was new to me but a friend had recommended). Showed my dad Jim Gaffigan because I had heard that he was born in our small city.

Fahrenheit 451 - Not the remake but the 1966 version with Julie Christie. I don't know why I like this crazy oddball movie but I do. I wouldn't even say it's a good movie. There's just some undefinable charm to it that I get.

Watched Prisoners on HBO today. This was my second time seeing it, but it had been a long time. If you like tense drama, DEFINITELY watch this. However, if the thought of child abduction causes you stress, prepare to get stressed the fuck out.

Hugh Jackman crushes it.

Me too! I have such a strange fondness for this movie.
It's also on Amazon Prime, but I've been watching just pieces at a time so I don't know what ending it has.

Since 8 am a geographic batchelor at the moment my movie watching has skyrocketed.

Crawl and Man VS both on Amazon prime are kind of a good pairing. Both are humans versus environment plus an extra threat. Crawl is a nicely done horror film about a family stuck in a flooding house....with giant Gators. It deals with most of the "get out!!!!" moments well, giving the characters as logical a motive at the time as possible. Gets a bit campy at the end. Reminds me a lot of 47 meters down:Underground in tone. Man VS is about a survival expert filming in the wilds, ala Les Stroud or Bear Gryls. Of course things can't be simple. It has some fairly predictable twists and some REAL dodgy effects but is suitably creepy at times and has more humanity in the lead than you'd expect. Fair warning, like every woodsman show these days he does skin what looks to be a real rabbit. It is a simple but effective film that could unfortunately went with bad CGI instead of prosthetics at a few key moments.

I watched Vivarium on Amazon Prime. A young couple finds themselves trapped in an idyllic subdivision. No one else is around. Soon they find a baby, in a box, with a simple note that says Raise the Child and be released.

It's a weird film that gets weirder as it goes. I can't say I enjoyed it.
