I have seen a majority of the Mel Brooks movies, but generally found them so-so. I did like Blazing Saddles, and my favorite is High Anxiety because I am a Hitchcock fan. I don't think that I have watched any Mel Brooks movies since the early 90's.
I finally watched the remake of 3:10 to Yuma after sitting on a library DVD that turned out to be scratched for two weeks and finally breaking down and renting it from Youtube. It was a pretty good Western with a changed ending from the beginning. In some ways I like the original more, because it emphasized the ethical choices faced by the hero. Russel Crowe was basically charismatic satan. The remake had a lot of action-ish gee-whizzery thrown in, like the main character shooting a bundle of dynamite that was flying through the air to stop their pursuers. It was a "soft' R, meaning one f-bomb and a ton of people getting shot. I find myself increasingly bothered by scenes where the sociopath baddy, out of nowhere, shoots someone without warning. It no longer has the power to shock, and feels super lazy. That happened a lot in Justified too, which is also basically a Western. It's like when my upper-middle-class colleagues drop a lot of f-bombs to show how street they are, and not embracing the fact that they are middle managers working for the state and their revolutionary potential was drained off a long time ago, like a lanced boil.
And now back to jackhammering the slab in our garage storage room.
The Black Phone A really good Joe Hill movie. Does a bang up job of absolutely nailing 1978. As a kid who knocked out his front teeth on a BMX cross bar, i loved that they showed the cross bar was invented years before the PADS for the cross bar was. Great soundtrack including Fox on the Run by Sweet. Probably my second favorite flick of the year behind Everthing. Everywhere

League of SuperPets is FANTASTIC. DC animation keeps on winning. Perfect combo of kid friendly slapstick with pure adult jokes ("better get a pre-nuuuuup") great action, good strong emotional beats, and actual character arcs, proper foreshadowing, and clever use of powers, not just punching harder. Why the live action stuff can't be this clever is beyond me.
When the classic superman and batman themes kick in....wow. Lots of elbows thrown at the current state of superhero films and a few ribs at marvel. GASP there are lesbians and Muslims in it so curious if the Lightyear bruhahah will carry over, probably not.
Took my 5 year old. She got bored a bit in the middle and a little scared when superman gets taken out (spoiler) but by the end she was 100% on board and jumping in the seat.
The scene stealing Keanu Reeves as batman and Keith David as Dog-el really makes this for me, the film is DIRECTLY taking the piss out of the overly grim Snyder verse and I love it.

I am continuing to work my way through the Bond movies. All of them. Well, okay, except the original Casino Royalle and Never Say Never Again, because Amazon Prime wants me to pay extra to rent them. Anyway, I managed to survive the awful Dalton Bond movies and have just started Goldeneye, which is supposed to be the best of the Brosnan Bond movies. Goldeneye is decent so far, but I decided to pause it early on because I just can't watch any more Bond movies for now. Will get back to it next week, maybe.
