What MOVIE(s) have you been....seeing? watching?

I get that they had to make it somewhat different from the original but the scene where Dalton meets the staff in the original should have been somewhat recreated IMO. It has some of the most iconic dialogue.

Watched a couple of movies that I skipped back when they came out. In honor of National Record Shop Day, I watched Empire Records. It wanted to be a wacky ensemble cast comedy along the lines of Clerks, but it falls flat. Mediocre with occasional flashes of unrealized potential. I made it all the way through the movie on my great nostalgia for the '90s, especially the music of the early '90s. Then I watched Flatliners, a dark movie about med students who become obsessed with the afterlife and take brief excursions there. The movie has good spooky atmosphere and a strong cast (Kevin Bacon, Julia Roberts, Kiefer Sutherland, Oliver Platt, and a Baldwin brother), but comes up short in imagination. Neither movie was great, but Flatliners is worth a watch.

I went to see Civil War last night with my sons. I have many thoughts and feelings about this movie but not enough energy to put them all down. Don't worry, I'll come back to this post after everyone has moved onto the next page and add some more ideas that nobody will ever see. Why not just post to a blog? Because there is something broken inside me that prevents me from writing for a potentially large audience.
  • There was a sense of warring militias and no easy ability map out your politics onto the movie
  • I think the people in front of us expected White House Down and left the theater in a daze
  • It was sort of a movie about war photographers
  • Every famous photograph of a terrible atrocity in another country gets acted out in this film
  • I woke up at 3:30 a.m. and had trouble getting back to sleep
  • My son said that Children of Men is probably a better version movie about social collapse
  • The movie has me thinking about the ways that feuding militias often precede a Civil War
  • "The Portland Maoists"

Cucumbers are stand-ins for eggplants.

I honestly had no interest in Civil War. At best, I thought it would be a dumb war movie. At worst, an idiotic fantasy like Red Dawn, glorifying the murdering of Americans because they think differently.
Seeing this video essay when it came out made me interested, made me think there is a real message there that is going to be missed by every stupid fuck who fantasizes about this happening.

Godzilla Minus One - I can't remember the last monster movie where I was rooting for the humans. Not that the big guy is any more of a menace than usual here. Its just far more of a character piece with a separate story to tell, set mostly in Tokyo just after WWII ends. Surely the best Godzilla movie ever made.

Someone said that Godzilla Minus One is really a horror movie, and I agree. Man, I loved actually being scared in a theater.

In an act of self-abuse and procrastination, I started rewatching Bourne: Ultimatum, or The Blair Bourne Project last night before retiring. It got an 8 on IMDB. It was fun, but it was just a retelling of one of the earlier films. "I've brought down the secret program, and now I get to bring down the secret program *above* that program" and they brought back Julia Stiles so her and Matt Damon could stare at each other without talking, while simultaneously realizing that they are both too damaged to ever find love. The entire movie was shot by the same cinematographer used by The Office. I think the central tension of this version is that once or twice Jason Bourne decides to not kill someone. Oh, and we learn that he actually resisted his training but they broke him by using waterboarding, which was probably in the news when this came out.

Really, aren't we all forgetting our pasts, and wondering how we became what we are?

I watched a Blu-Ray on the high seas. Assumed that meant it was being released widely but I guess just in Japan for now.

Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire - Some CGI attacks some other CGI. And then, believe it or not, some more CGI joins the fray. Also, Kong goes to the dentist.

Saw Krasinski's IF with my 5th grader. I was pretty bored by it, as it is a jumbled mess of themes and ideas with no real sense of internal logic or worldbuilding, but my kid liked it well enough (a 7.5/10) so I guess the loose nature of the plot, the engaging girl lead, and a somewhat distant and frumpy Ryan Reynolds was enough for him. The film LOOKS amazing, WOW did they spend a lot on the set design, the oddly retro costuming, and the CG for the IFs, all of whom are at least cool to look at, though the "who's voice is that?" game distracts a bit as well. But I suspect gramophones, suspenders, wing-tip shoes, and high waisted carnival barker pants are gonna make a comeback :P

I'm sure I could go fire up The Goonies, Explorers, or any number of kid centered 80's films and find similar "kid logic" plots that don't really make sense to an adult so it's probably an unfair criticism of the film, but it just isn't funny enough, zany enough, or interesting enough to hold my attention and the inconsistencies, particularly the ending, just don't cut it.

Still, there are worse ways to spend some time and $$$ and "the message", such as it is, seems to play better for kids.

Every time someone says something like "it's a kid's show but there is stuff in there for adults!" I want to say "you know what else has stuff for adults? Adult movies."
