When your kids ask you to get Rhino Hero Super Battle, you shouldn't ask any questions like 'aren't you too old for this?' You should do what I did and just go for it. One play in, money well spent.

I’m really interested in hearing more about Gliders Racing. I nearly went for a copy because I love quirky sports and slice-of-life themed games, but held back because it looked like lots of number crunching on a big old grid.

Gliders Racing -- haven't played it yet. The math looks pretty doggone simple, like adding single-digit numbers and looking on a chart. I think this is a lighter fare but I really need to give it a shot before the Christmas Hollandspiele rush hits. I'll let you know! I'm of the opinion that with some house rules the game could be more dynamic, though I don't think anyone has ever mounted machine guns on a glider. Too heavy.
The designer is a commercial airline pilot, which he makes clear on the box. The one thing I've noticed about commercial airline pilots is they always tell you that they're a commercial airline pilot. Apparently this is true in Poland as well.
Looking to buy Wingspan which will get me free shipping from Walmart for other items. (Now there's a reason to buy a $60 game.) I'm a casual birder and I moved into a house surrounded by old-growth forest 2 years ago, so it's become a hobby that greets me every morning when I step outside with the dogs. I think I sorta need to own Wingspan just because of the art. I've heard it's a very satisfying game to play in a more pastoral sense. Could use something like that.
A quick review of the Wingspan box indicates that the designer is not a commercial airline pilot.

Maybe it's because they think they are the best birds.Sagrilarus wrote: The one thing I've noticed about commercial airline pilots is they always tell you that they're a commercial airline pilots.

Off topic ramble: about a decade ago I had a colleague who was retraining as a commercial airline pilot. From the day he started it was literally the only thing that he would talk about. I learnt during this time that with all the automated systems they have in modern planes it is also one of the most boring jobs in the world. Then again it’s the kind of job that you want to be boring, for everybody’s sake.

A follow-up on Gliders Racing. The designer is a commercial airline pilot, which apparently doesn't make him gifted at writing rules. I was unable to make the game function properly this evening. I would always land within a few spaces of the starting space because I was losing altitude faster than I could gain it. It's fair to say dramatically faster. So I am assuredly misinterpreting a rule. Not a lot of people chatting this game up but I posted on BGG's rules forum for the game, as the designer and a couple of Polish players tune in there. Perhaps the Polish rules are clearer.
I think there's room for a game here similar to Yacht Race or the like, so it would be a salvageable package even if the rules as written don't work. But I think it's fair to give the designer a few days to respond and point out the thing that I'm clearly missing. He may be out of the pocket for a bit, as he's a commercial airline pilot.

Those seem like nice gifts. I've been playing a bit of Tablut on BGA lately, which something like a smaller version of Hnefatafl, and it's a good game. Wouldn't mind someday having a nice looking Hnefatalf set myself since I play enough abstracts where it would get some use.Jackwraith wrote: I didn't buy (because I have no money), but received a very late birthday present of the game of Ur, Senet, and the Viking game recently. Think I've reached my quota of classic abstracts. I've played Senet before, but not the other two, so it will be cool to try to suss them out. I've seen two almost completely different rulesets for Ur. I think we'll start with the race game rules that make it kind of an older version of backgammon (kind of like Senet) before trying the other.

Also bought Sub Terra Collector's Edition on Mr Look's recommendation (looking forward to that), and then picked up Mistfall (have owned and enjoyed this before) and Mistfall: Heart of the Mists as there is a fire sale on them over here.
.... And then we were locked down.

Thank you for mentioning this, I just bagged some great Christmas presents here. I decided to go for the campaign add-on and both big box expansions as they were all at rock bottom prices and which all came to less than sixty quid.

Yeah. Hnefatafl has definitely been the winner of the three around here. It's a really interesting positional quandary because of the capturing mechanism. I've won once as each side, but there's a lot there to explore.
