People were talking about Nexus Ops in another thread recently and I sat there thinking to myself: "You know, that was a decent game for a DoaM." I generally like my DoaMs to be more complex, but it's great for that style of game that can be played in 45 minutes. Plus, it's a decent intro to that style of game (that I might even be able to talk my girlfriend into.) I'd always played a friend's copy, so I went looking on BGG and found an Avalon Hill version (yes, the one that everyone here insists is aesthetically superior to FFG's) for $40 and snagged it. It still had the shrink wrap on it.

I tracked down a near mint copy on my favorite worst game, Blood Royale, to replace my battered and tired copy that has followed me since 1987. At $35, a steal.

Picked up the Z-Man version of Through the Desert. I used to own the pre-silver line FFG version and think I sold it when the game was out of print. Always found the FFG board too bland and dark so the Z-Man board is a nice upgrade.

One of the better euro designs that has sadly been forgotten with the glut of new games

A friend is culling his 700 game collection, so I repurchased Battlelines, which my wife will play, and Patchwork, which looks fun and is cheap.

I'm also playing Root this week for the first time.

Edit: my secret Paypal slush fund somehow evaporated, so no game purchases, but still playing Root!

Whoops. Accidentally on purpose bought Up Front.

I lowballed an antiquies/curios store selling it on ebay. Their asking price was fairly high but still reasonable if you're after am original copy, here (Aus) - they'd obviously done some homework. They accepted, to my surprise.

Now I just need to teach my 5 year old.

I recently picked up Black Orchestra and Clash of Monarchs. I'm not certain how often CoM will make it to the table, but it covers a period in history that appeals to me.

It is a real gem, Jake. You won't be disappointed, it's an outstanding operational game.

CoM is a good game. Probably my all time favorite because it’s such a great game about the period. But it isn’t easy to find players.

Agreed. Probably the longest and most complex card driven game out there.

CoM shines on VASSAL. In fact, the printed map gets a fair amount grief because of the dark drab Mahaffey palette, but on a monitor it is easy to read. A game takes several Friday nights to complete but that gives enjoyable time for reflection and thinking. I had a regular gaming partner for this one. But the warrior spirit descended upon me and I crushed him in back to back games, first as the Prussians/Brits, then... as the French/Austrian/Russians. He quit the game forever. This is a guy who never lost a game of PoG or UKC to me even once.

Are you willing to school another opponent? Can this be played easily as a PBeM type affair? Or are there too many interruptive actions played on an opponents turn?

Cheers

It is very interactive but it can be done. Best way is with email exchanges without files for interrupts, withdrawals, etc.

I don’t even have a PC anymore, so I’m afraid I cannot at this time. The youths in my house usurped my control of the family PC, nuked it, then built their own rigs. CoM over VASSAL is the only reason I would get a new one. It’s tempting!

Friend’s game store had a buy-two-get-one sale this past weekend, so I picked up a few good few handfuls of Harry Potter TCG packs from the first three sets.

I’ve been off random boosters since middle school, but they were fun to open especially as I had no idea what to expect. Didn’t pull any of the big three, but we did get three Draco Malfoys, one of them some weird holo thing that’s a strain to see. Looking forward to building a few decks for a light game with the wife after the boys go to bed.
