TOPIC: What TV SHOWS are you watching?

What TV SHOWS are you watching? 06 May 2018 20:29 #272758

I am watching episode two of the first season of American Gods. I read the book many years ago, but only vaguely remember it. The novella length sequel was actually more memorable for me, because somehow I could visualize it being drawn by Mike Mignola (Hellboy).

It has been said that a real leader can lead you where you don't want to go. Likewise, Neil Gaiman is a real storyteller who can tell you a story that you didn't want to hear, and make you anxious to hear what happens next. I didn't enjoy the initial episode of this show, because nearly every character is ugly, unpleasant, or both. I disliked the opening credits and music, and the historical interlude with the vikings was garishly violent and stupid. I also disliked most of the song selections throughout that first episode. And yet, by the closing minutes, I was hooked.

Finally finished Gundam, all 43 episodes.

It's definitely an anime series about war. If my memory serves me, not a single episode is without something blowing or someone killed. Of course, it's probably the product of the era. Unlike most new series which focus on characters interaction, this is definitely about war. The series tell the story about the ship White Base and its crew throughout the war, and it's never delayed--not by character angst, school festivals or love stories. It's just going forward. Even when affected by war-weariness or defection, the crew rarely loses (much) of its combat effectiveness. The small bits of non-war things that made it to the series are just the right amount, with characters having their development without hindering the overall pace.

Also unlike other Gundam series, while the White Base is important, it's not the only thing in the war. A lot of other things happen. Battles were truly massive, with lots of death and destruction (and repetitive animation).

If you are interested in anyway in Gundam and have the time, you may want to see this. Or at the very least the abridged version.

STRONGLY recommend the abridged version over the 43 episode run...don’t know if it is still around but there is a 3 disc set that has the first three Mobile Suit Gundam films, which are...all 43 episodes condensed to about 5 hours. I don’t feel like there is any loss.

Man, watching 43 episodes of that is pretty heroic though...

I've heard some really, really good things about Legend of the Galactic Heroes re: a war anime, I'd really like to see that one.

My wife and daughter are big fans of The Walking Dead, and I had half-watched about half of them with them. They're watching TV, and I'm surfing or gaming on the laptop. So I finally started watching it - filling in all of the episodes I haven't seen. Some are really, really good; some are really, really dumb; and most are okay.

The wife and I are fans of Forged in Fire and now they have a spinoff show where competitors run through a course that tests their particular bladed weapon. An unfortunate name Forged in Fire: Knife or Death, but fun to watch. Also, I had no idea that there were chopping competitions centered on knives.

I was floored by season 1. I liked the book okay--I think Gaiman's a strong storyteller, but I find his prose pretty uninteresting. The show capitalizes on the storytelling and matches it with Bryan Fuller's visual sense, which is nothing less than astonishing. Every shot is gorgeous and strange. I also think the new material they added for the show really works as well.

I'm a little worried about season 2--with Fuller departing, I wonder if it'll retain its style.

So this happened during American Gods, season one, episode three... girlfriend gets home from work, walks into living room.
GF: What are you watching?
Me: American Gods.
GF: [immediately disinterested] Oh.
GF: Are those two guys?
Me: ... yeah.
GF: Are you watching gay porn?
Me: [lengthy and defensive explanation as the scene concludes, finally salvaged by reminding her that Neil Gaiman and her fav Tori Amos are friends.]

Saw episode 2 of the Rajneeshi cult doc on Netflix. As you said, thus far I'm just growing to hate the hick assholes who live there more and more. It's funny how not upsetting the freakout film plays in 2018 that horrified everyone about what the cult might be up to.

Ready for the cult to get real fucked up in the next episode or so.

That show was super fascinating from the standpoint of conflict resolution, because at no point does anyone involved really bypass the opportunity the de-escalate the whole thing. After all is said and done I'm not sure anyone comes out of that series looking very good. Really great documentary, I like how they largely take all of the Rajneeshis at face value, not really making them look like blinkered dummies.

If you’re a Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy kind of person, Amazon’s Night Manager is good. Tom Hiddleston plays a reluctant spy, does well, interesting and well written.

I found the characters dialogue to be one of the most intriguing parts of the show, especially the leprechaun.

After recently getting hooked on THE EXPANSE, bummed to find out that ScyFy is dropping it after this season. Hopefully some other network picks it up.

What? Fuck. That's depressing. C'mon Netflix - use some of that House of Cards money.
