Oh man that sounds pretty great. Although, I couldn’t stomach Dresden Files — I thought the writing was clunky as hell and the whole thing was corny. How does this compare?

Correia's stuff is pretty fast paced and heavy with the snark. If Dresden were written by Robert E. Howard maybe. I find them to be nice palate cleansers between heavier works, kinda like how some folks view John Grisham or those Jack Reacher books. I think Tor puts out a lot of their writers 'first in a series' books out for free so you can probably try one out. Monster Hunter International pays his bills I think but I enjoy all his stuff. They are quite ameritrashy :)

I nearly pissed myself laughing at Gangsta Lawn Gnomes concept.

Started the 4th and final season of Castlevania on Netflix. Enjoying it so far, and am hoping it turns out better than last season, which I really didn't find all that great.

The first episode is very combat heavy, which makes it very fun.

Don't know if it has been mentioned or not, but if you like True Detective, Mare of Easton, Unforgotten, and the like, and haven't seen it yet (it is a couple years old) check out Sharp Objects (I think it is on both Amazon Prime and HBOMax). I just recently discovered it and ended up binging it (it a limited series with only like 6 episodes) in between episodes of Mare.

P.S. It's super to have discovered so many of you enjoy crime/mystery drama. I usually feel kind of on my own with this, as most folks I know don't care for it. I have really appreciated all the suggestions here.

Sharp Objects is great. I watched it back when it came out and there are still visuals and scenes in that show that haunt me.

Uba - did you watch Unbelievable? That's another in that True Detective style category that was fantastic. It's a Netflix limited series.

What exactly is the "True Detective style"? The wisp of supernatural? The time jumps? The focus on one long case? Or just the melancholy morose tone? I liked season 1 quite a bit, season 2 was a mess, and season 3 was just kinda....eh. I would be down for more of that but I need assurances that there is either a nice payoff for all the extended shots of characters standing in the rain (The Killing failed in this for me) or that it is just dynamic enough with great characters that the trip is worth it even if it has a bit of a soft ending (S1 of TD).

I'll second Unbelievable. That was really good. I'd also recommend The Night Of from a couple of years ago, and The Outsider, if you like supernatural stuff.

Just to add to the list of serial detective fare that Uba has surely already seen...

The whole "You never curse" diatribe was hysterical.

The Night Of is great, good call. It's what used to come to mind when I saw Riz Ahmed in something, that is until I saw The Sound of Metal.

The Outsider was also good but I thought it kind of petered out over time. It started off very strong though.

I'd say the True Detective Style could also be described as the Se7en style. Dark, gritty, morally challenging, stark and stylish cinematography.

The modern version of Perry Mason on HBO was a good detective show in just 8 episodes. There will be a second season, but with different showrunners.

Been re-watching Banshee and it's still an entertaining show 8 years later.
