What TV SHOWS are you watching?

Finished Brand New Cherry Flavor. That was one of the most uncomfortable shows I've ever watched. Not for the squeamish.

While the plot was interesting and kept me watching, I can't say I enjoyed this show, at all. The things happening on screen are far too unpleasant for that. The main character is out for revenge, and let's say they go to great lengths to get it. They are kind of like Frank Castle, in that everyone who meets them is left worse-off for having done so.

I expected the title to be explained over the course of the series. It isn't.

Is cherry flavor a bunch of Eli Roth style torture porn, graphic sexual assault, or just incredibly bad people doing incredibly bad things (kinda like that nursing home scammer movie with Peter Dinklage)? Don't often hear about a streaming show that elicits that kind of reaction outside of japanese/korean stuff.

It's some graphic violence, a lot of gross shit being ingested in various ways, things coming out of a person in multiple ways, all gross, and the most fucked up sex scene I have ever witnessed.

I have never watched an Eli Roth film, but I suspect some of it would fall in line with that.

He directed the upcoming Borderlands movie, which I will watch, but obviously that one won't have any of that shit in it.

Now I think watching it is a personal challenge :P

Once I get Netflix back for the Witcher I'll have to spring this on the wife without telling her about it :)

For over a decade, the only way I watched tv was by checking out a season of a show from the public library. Since the library would only allow dvds to be checked out for a week, I needed to binge watch each show. That was fine if I was unemployed or my girlfriend was doing business travel for a week, but otherwise it was a heavy time commitment. Even after I finally got a modern big screen tv and streaming service, it took some time to get out of the binge-watching habit.

Currently, I am doing something different from binge-watching that doesn't seem to have pop culture label yet. Thanks to HBO Max, I have sort of moved into the DC universe by watching five different tv shows in rotation, all set in various versions of the DC setting: Doom Patrol, Titans, Harley Quinn, Star Girl, and Batman: the Animated Series. Some of these shows are significantly better than others, but watching them collectively is sort of how I used to read comics. I would go to the comic store once every week or two and grab the latest issues of my favorites plus maybe a few back issues or samples of titles that I hadn't tried before. As soon as time permitted, I would read the whole stack in one sitting, letting the collective colors, violence, and weirdness sweep over me. Once comics hit $4.00 per issue, that habit became too expensive to sustain, especially after I bought a house.

The HBO (or DCplus or whatever the hell their initial foray into streaming was) DC shows are pretty unconnected from each other I think, but the CW ones certainly are not, so watching them in any order can be a bit confusing. Plus these shows usually have some sort of connective tissue plot lines so even while the A plot is episodic, the B plot is serialized. Makes it hard for me to just pop in like I could for countless eps of earlier TV shows.

It still frustrates me to no end that "playlists" are not a thing on these streaming channels so I can just click a specific schedule of stuff from a curated list or something I download off the interwebz and plug into my account so it will all roll out before me in the 'proper' order without me having to hunt for each next episode across several series. Or just watch "the good" eps of Seinfeld, ER, or whatever.

I think some guy tried to patent the concept of a playlist and then sued a bunch of podcasters and the like in what was essentially an extortion shakedown, so I wonder if that is why this idea has not come to fruition. Or they just want to force you to have to browse their categories in the hope you will see other stuff and keep subscribing.

And really, once I started B:AS I don't think I could be bothered with the other stuff. That show runs so well into S:AS, JL, and Young Justice.

I own season two of B:AS (lucky find at a huge clearance sale), so it's been a long time since I have seen episodes from season one or season three. I vaguely recalled that season one wasn't very good, but I was mistaken. About halfway into season one, the show suddenly becomes very good. There is a definite shift away from slow-moving stories padded out with exposition and cliches, in favor of episodes that do a much better job of showing instead of telling. It's about trusting your audience to notice things and maybe figure something out instead of just pointing at things in a very blunt manner.

One weird thing that used to happen when I binge-watched shows was that I would start dreaming about those shows. Or even worse, dreaming that I was friends with the cast of a given show. I think that my current viewing habits are a little more healthy.

Only Murders In The Building, the first three episodes came out on Hulu last Tuesday so my wife and I watched through them. It's Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez as a trio of true crime podcast afficianados who live in a big fancy New York apartment building where a death happens. The police call it a suicide, but they are sure it's a murder. Drama and hijinx ensue. It's got a great cast, and a good blend of comedy and drama. If you like that kind of thing I really can't recommend it enough. Not sure how many episodes they're doing but new ones are dropping Tuesdays.

Steve Martin and Martin Short (can they add Chevy Chase for an ep just for a Three Amigos reunion?), quirky NYC setting, seems like a lot to like there. I had forgotten where I saw it but I currently have Hulu so I'll check it out.

I tore through all 5 episodes of the newly released season 5 of Money Heist on Netflix. This show is a good time, and I'm glad to see that more is coming in December.

Watched the first three eps of Only Murders in the Building per the previous rec. Pretty good, not quite sure it has it's footing yet. I wish there was more NYC in general to it and a bit less broadway theater. I think it wants to be a Woody Allen style quirky comedy but so far it leans more into tragic backstory than comedy or the mystery. I was hoping for more of a "The Spanish Prisioner" vibe myself.

Selena Gomez is by far the weak link here. Of course nearly anyone will pale in comparison to Martin and Short, particularly Short playing a flamboyant character and Martin being Martin (hmmm, I realize that it might be confusing just using last names here :). Gomez has a lot of great lines but she can't pull off the snark. I feel like they wrote that part for Jennifer Lawrence who has a much more sarcastic style. Gomez is just so deadpan, particularly when given some emotional stuff to convey just with her face.

Still, while I have Hulu I'll keep watching but I'm not sure it will hold me to keep subscribing unless it perks up quite a bit.

Bluey is absolutely delightful. It’s a slice of life children’s animation out of Australia about a Blue Heeler and her family. Just little six-minute episodes of Bluey making up games with her friends or playing with her dad and sister. Sometimes characters get annoyed or sad or frustrated, and it’s taken seriously but never too heavily. Dad absolutely steals every scene, though. He’ll play with his girls but try to watch cricket at the same time. Bluey once found him asleep on the floor and asked her mom what he was dreaming about. Probably playing football with his friends, she said. Bluey didn’t know he did that. Because he didn’t have time for it anymore, said mom. Truth bomb, right there. My boys love it and even play some of her games.

On the other end of the spectrum I’m watching A.P. Bio with my wife. Another entry in the bad teacher genre, a Harvard philosophy professor ends up teaching biology in Toledo after being passed for tenure. “Teaching.” He spends most classes planning revenge on everyone who might have slighted him, including students. It works. I wish every character had more screen time, and the teacher isn’t overbearing in his causticity because he’s pretty clearly miserable himself. It’s on Peacock which is pretty easy to add to your streaming library as it includes a free option and a surprisingly strong stable of films including all three John Wicks and The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover.
