Watched the first episode of season four of The Boys last night. I was surprised that the showrunners decided to break up a happy couple on the show in favor of a bisexual hookup, and it initially seemed like an actor quit the show because he didn't want to play those scenes. Actually, the actor in question simply lost quite a bit of weight since season three, and he is still with the show. There is an even more extreme scene featuring Homelander bullying a couple of his teammates in an outrageous manner. As I suspected, there was a big freakout in MAGAland, and apparently many of them are just starting to realize that Homelander is a bad guy. This must be difficult for them to handle, because they already understand that Homelander (the tv version) is based on Trump. Anyway, if you aren't homophobic or a Trump follower, you will probably enjoy season four just as much as the previous seasons of The Boys.

I've watched all 3 released episodes of The Boys season 4. It's more of The Boys, alright. I'm in, but was hoping for something a little different.

It is hilarious that the MAGA chuds are just now figuring out that they are the butt of the joke. They probably just thought of it as representation before.

I watched Scavengers Reign on Netflix. This was a Max show that made its way over to Netflix. 12 episodes about a space freighter that has a catastrophic malfunction forcing people into escape pods. A few of these people end up on the planet below the ship, separated from even each other.

They soon find that everything on this planet wants to eat you / attach to you / otherwise fuck you up.

The design of the creatures / the planet is the real draw here; it's like nothing I've ever seen and it's obvious that a lot of thought went into it. I watched all of it because I wanted to see what happened to all of these poor motherfuckers, but I can't say at the end of the day that I really "liked" it. But if there is a score for originality, this gets all of the points.

I watched the premier of season 2 of House of Dragons. I really just don't care about any of these people. It's all very meh. The dragons look cool.

Was in London a few weeks back and saw a production of Much Ado About Nothing at the Globe Theatre. As I am a lifelong Bard fan, I was kind of enraptured. We came back to do the tour the next day and our guide was very forward in talking about why Shakespeare's writing has lasted. He repeatedly cited two things: 1. Shakespeare was always very conscious of the fact that he was telling a story. That's why his characters break the fourth wall so often. He was communicating directly with the audience who knew that they were being told a story. 2. His characters are compelling. They're memorable. Even if the plots aren't that deep, the characters are what resonate in people's minds.

About the third time he'd made this point, my girlfriend turned to me and said: "This is like listening to you." I was like: "YES! Yes, it is!" That's the point I've been making my entire life: 1. Tell me a story. 2. Make your characters human and not just levers to move the plot. When he was wrapping up, he made the point again and cited a particular example: "Think about Game of Thrones. The characters are memorable and that's why people keep watching and will remember it. Now think about House of the Dragon. Those characters are just ciphers." He's exactly right which was my complaint about House from the very beginning and why I'm not concerned at all about not seeing it again.

On this recommendation, I watched the first three episodes last night. I'm interested because I like the concept of the whole world being alive and them having to learn to really engage with it (the creatures as breathing masks and power cables and enhancers of circuitry and on and on.) The only thing that kinda had me frowning was the easy and speedy adaption that all of the humans had made. It seems like they've only been there for a few weeks, but they've already learned to do all of this with all of these different creatures and plants? I mean, OK. If that's the suspension of disbelief that has to happen, fine. It just struck me as a little odd that we weren't seeing more of the experimentation phase. But that would make the series both slower and longer and it is still happening to a certain degree, like when the storm comes and Ursula and Sam realize that the big things in the water are sheltering their young from it. But, man, that's a TON of risk and an impressive amount of acumen to make a snap decision like that and think that those things weren't just devouring their food supply before the storm ruined it. But I'm interested enough to watch more.

Excellent points about Scavengers Reign, and I guess the only way to kind of justify it is that they don't ever explore what people knew prior to landing on this planet; how much of it is truly new to them. They clearly make very good assumptions about some things.

I’ve enjoyed House of the Dragon for its more personal approach. As a parent, the themes of parent-child relationships is quite interesting, and the underlying “a series of misunderstandings and mistakes” leading to terrible events feels very real.

Yeah, there’s no impending world doom, nor truly awful people doing truly awful things, no prophecies, no mysterious magic, none of the trappings of grand fantasy. And I’m here for it.

We Are Lady Parts is borderline reason alone to subscribe to Peacock. Absolutely no fall off from the first season. Saria and Amina take a bit of a backseat for the rest of the band to get their own storylines, and they’re all up to the task. Just a lot of lovely performances and writing.

Reminds me a lot of Carole and Tuesday. Kind of a rote story, nothing really unexpected, but executed so well that it doesn’t matter. Also an absolute love of the music that plays the songs in their entirety.

I loved Game of Thrones, even the questionable final seasons, but only endured season 1 of House of the Dragon. That tour guide was absolutely right. For better and worse, many characters in Game of Thrones are memorable, while the majority of the characters in House of the Dragon are ciphers. I don't really care which side wins in House of the Dragon, because I don't care about the characters. I haven't started season two yet because I am busy with other shows, but one of my friends is pestering me to watch season two so we can talk about it.

Still enjoying Season 4 of The Boys. I like the more pointed political satire, even if it often lacks subtlety. Can't shake the feeling that Sage is going to completely betray Homelander by the end of this season, and that has probably been her plan ever since Homelander first contacted her. She clearly dislikes her teammates and their supporters, even though she slept with one of her teammates.

I also watched the diabolical cartoon segments for The Boys, but found them mostly disappointing and had to nope out of the one featuring a sentient piece of poop.
