Just saw John Carter...

prequels and sequels... :)

Take a chance, Barney. Go see John Carter.

good point Jeff, maybe I do like prequels and sequels in the end. Last year the movie I most looked forward to was Tron Legacy.

repoman, I'm not judging John Carter like I judge other movies that I've seen. it simply doesn't look great and I've also heard it's average. It doesn't draw me at all. I hear that 21 Jump Street is good fun. Hunger Games looks interesting to me (I love Running Man, especially as a book)

...yeah the more I think about it, maybe I don't like IPs at all.

Actually it was orginally titled "Battle Royale". ;-)

I've got to go see this myself on Saturday and I'm not looking forward to it, but my wife is so excited that she insists the whole family go. The whole Hunger Games book phenomenon reminds me of the same thing that happened with Twilight (adored by teenage girls and housewives nationwide!), but hopefully I'll be pleasantly surprised. Personally I'd rather go see John Carter kick some ass and ogle the Martian princess in 3-D.

I will go out on a line and say that I predict Hunger Games will actually be good. Jennifer Lawrence is REALLY a strong actress and I think she might be able to carry a movie on her own. They didn't cast Kristen Stewart for a reason. I thought the trailer was weak but interesting. I'll try and see it Friday.

btw I saw 21 Jump Street today and it was really funny. 4.5 stars out of 5 (that's being a BIT generous maybe). Really funny and fun.

Man, I hate 3D. Maybe that's why I'm avert to seeing JC too

Black Barney wrote: Hey, I have the opportunity to see 4 movies in short order.

Today: 21 Jump Street
Friday: hunger games (looks great)
Monday: The Lorax (i don't expect it to be great but surely better than JohN Carter)
Tuesday; Safe House (same)

Even without the best choice still being in the theater (JC), anyone who ops to pay cash money to view these four movies in a week has lost all cred as a movie critic.

fair enough. They are the 'best' playing in the theatre closest to where I work. And 'best' is relative, not absolute. I think the only good movie out of all of those will be 21 Jump Street. I'm impresed I didn't see Silent House which I wanted to see but knew it would be terrible.

Oh well, hopefully one day I'll get my cred back, yo. And Jeff, just so I'm crystal clear on your understanding of what makes a credible movie critic (which I'm not) is that you'd actually have to be drawn to see John Carter based on those trailers? Like if those trailers turned you off of seeing it, you INSTANTLY lose all credibility?

hey speaking of john carter...

Disney has announced it expects to lose around $200,000,000 on ‘John Carter’, which not only cost $250 million to produce, but spent another $100 million on advertising. Advertising which gave people the impression that this movie was about aliens in Arizona fighting a really good jumper who was wearing He-Mans chest plate for some reason.

(lol, i love the commentary)

Nah, credible movie critics only need to have the same taste as me.

Well, that or actually see a movie before they call it dumb. :)

Anyway, yeah apparently it was called a dud almost immediately. It just seems so bizarre how that 100million was spent on such bad marketing.

But yeah, check out a few pages of comments after this article. Folks had no idea what it was about, but those that did it would appear as if the majority think it's a good film.

now now, I didn't call the movie dumb. I said that the movie is for dumb people. That's what the trailer is selling at least.

Well, I've just seen it and enjoyed it immensely. It's spectacular, amazing fight scenes, 3D's certainly getting better. Great chemistry between the two leads, great romance. It was a LOT better than I was expecting and faithful to the books (though it's been a long time since I read them). I'll certainly buy the DVD when it comes out.

Go see it Barney.
