Michael Barnes wrote: I used to want to go to Coachella so freaking bad...I mean, the bands they get...Gang of Four, New Order, My Bloody Valentine, GOD DAMNED Kraftwerk, Daft Punk, Public Image LTD., Bauhaus, TV on the Radio, on and on and on...but then I realized that I'd be out in the desert with a bunch of complete fuckups, hipsters, and other assorted folks who would likely bob their heads and dance noncomittally to whatever band was on stage. And suddenly I had no desire to go at all.

I've actually only ever been to one music festival, there was Music Midtown thing here in Atlanta...it was like The Cult, Run DMC, Al Green, Cheap Trick, Joan Jett, Devo, Public Enemy, a bunch of other fairly mainstream but good stuff. I was so excited to see all these bands, and it just sucked. Overcrowded, nobody really there to see anything, just to hang out and drink Miller Light while wearing a tube top and daisy dukes. Men too.

I guess Lollapalooza was a festival too, but it was more focused. I went in '92. Saw Ice Cube, Jesus and Mary Chain, Lush, and Ministry. An unknown band called Pearl Jam was the second act.

I went that year too. It was the second Lalapalooza.

Pearl Jam was fantastic. Back when they still had fire. One of the best live shows I've ever seen and it was in the middle of the afternoon.

Ministry was just too damn loud. I was literally painful. I had to leave the stage area.

Jesus and Mary Chain, I was like one of the five dudes that was there to see them. The lead singer got all pissy because there weren't enough people to see him. Total douche. Get mad and deride the fans.

Chili Peppers were good but they were totally outdone by Pearl Jam.

I have a vivid memory of Ministry at that Lollapalooza. I had a major out of body experience of sorts, brought on more from dehydration I think than the acid I was probably still on at that point. I remember at one point, when a song ended, I looked around me and the crowd was still jumping up and down. It was as though the music was still playing. Then I looked at the stage, and the band was bopping too, as though they were still playing. Then I realized that they really were still playing, and that I was still hearing the music, but was somehow so inside it that, despite its intensity it became background. Or maybe it was that I almost passed out.

*shakes head disapprovingly to himself at his past self*

edit: the song was Just One Fix.
