I've been very impressed with the taste in music of the regulars here at F:AT, so I thought it would be fun to see us all wrestle with the question of What Was the Best Cover Version of Each Beatles Song?

For "Got to Get You Into My Life," I submit this fabulous version by Earth Wind & Fire:

Well, Siouxsie and the Banshees knock off two of 'em, Helter Skelter and Dear Prudence.

The Damned take "Help", easily.

Laibach covered all of Let It Be, their cover of "Across the Universe" is hilarious.

Wilson Pickett's "Hey Jude" is good.

Oasis - I Am the Walrus (tailor-made for them)

U2 - Helter Skelter (call me weird, I love Rattle & Hum)

Siouxie - Dear Prudence (I've soured on this over the years...)

U2's version doesn't sound desperate enough. Bono also changes the the first verse from "then I see you again" to "then you see me again" which I shouldn't care about, but it's just so goddamn Bono to bring the focus to himself instead of singing the song the way it's written.

Benatar knocked Helter Skelter out of the park when I saw her live 30 years ago. Didn't hurt that Giraldo may be the most underrated guitar player in rock history.

If you want to hear the worst all-time covers of Beatles' songs, make sure to tune in to Fox on Sept 26 for the season 5 premiere of GLEE. It's going to be a two-part all Beatles-extravaganza.

God help you.

How about a stupendous Irish folk cover of Elanor Rigby?

Confession: I never liked the Beatles all that much. I think a lot of these covers are actually better than the original songs.

Never heard that before. Nice! To me, it would've been better a bit dirtier and with Bob on lead vox instead of Grant.

This cover of I Want You (She's So Heavy) by Tapes 'n' Tapes is probably a little too on the nose to be a great cover, but I think the video would make for a fun beer commercial.

I like U2 a lot, but they have really butchered some covers. Their version of Helter Skelter is a little awful to me, but the worst is their version of Unchained Melody, which is so over the top that it ceases to be lovely and becomes unbearable.

They did do a strange version of Happiness is a Warm Gun that could be considered a travesty, but I think goes so far around the bend that it comes back around to interesting.

Barnes, I'm glad that you brought that cover by The Damned to my attention. I made a bad mistake and watched the Deep Purple attempt earlier today, and that was a fiasco that seemed to involve temporary brain swaps with the members of Procul Harum. Ugh.

I'll nominate a couple:

Black Keys - She Said, She Said

Jimi Hendrix plays Day Tripper: (oh Owsley, can you hear me now?)

If Hendrix is disqualified by the presence of an actual Beatle, you can have this oddity instead (this one's for you, Barnes)
