In 40 years, people like Ke$ha are going to die, and nobody will care.

Rip Petty, and Rip music of note.

HODEUP...it was straight up reported "Tom Petty, dead at 66" complete with Ryan Adams' Twitter reaction. Now they are saying he's not dead.

Not as many will care when Ke$ha dies, but there will at least be narrow age segment that does care. People that were 15 when she was popular, give or take a few years.

Not to get all Get Off My Lawn or anything, but there was a sharp drop in the quality of mainstream pop music in the late '90s, and no recovery since then. I have heard some great new music since then, but most didn't make the Top 40. When I was growing up, you could hear good music just by turning on the radio.

I wasn't a huge fan of Tom Petty, but I knew who he was and enjoyed some of his hits. Sorry to hear the bad news about him today.

Yeah not dead, but no brain activity and not expected to last the day.

I have enjoyed a lot of his hits. If he has no chance of recovery then I hope he goes peacefully.

He was the soundtrack of high school and college. I started listening to the album with Free Fallin' while a custodian at BYU. I think I got it through the BMG tape club or something. Wiping those stadium seats down in the sun. I almost got fired from that job.

He started using heroin in his fifties.

When the tour ended, Petty's marriage dissolved after 22 years together. He moved out of their house into what he called a "chicken shack." To numb the pain, he turned to heroin. A therapist convinced him to check into a detox clinic. "They shoot this drug into you that literally drives the heroin out and your body goes into spasms," he told biographer Warren Zanes. "It forces the detox process. When I woke up from that, I felt different. And I said to the nurse, 'So, it went OK?' She says, 'Yeah, it went OK.' I said, 'How long have I been asleep?' She says, 'Two days.'"

Drug abuse is such a fucked up thing. Lots of/most people survive but even if they kick them it has removed like 5-10 years if they hit it hard. But not like, immediately dying. They're just going to die at 65 or 70 rather than 77 or 80. Weird.

Excepting Keith Richards, of course, he will inexplicably live forever.

I honestly believe a Keith gas inadvertently embalmed himself with the regimen of substances he has treated himself with.
