- A SPOILER of Ice and Fire -- Game of Thrones, Clash of Kings, et al.
Bugs: Recent Topics Paging, Uploading Images & Preview (11 Dec 2020)
Recent Topics paging, uploading images and preview bugs require a patch which has not yet been released.
A SPOILER of Ice and Fire -- Game of Thrones, Clash of Kings, et al.
- PLEASE USE SPOILER TAGS IN HERE. Even though the whole thing is labeled SPOILER, I want to try to help folks that blunder in here get the fuck out before they are roont.
- Don't lead with a spoiler if you can help it. The first line of each post appears in the "See What's Happening" pulldown. Don't ruin someone's good times because they wanted to see who posted last in the Video Games forum. if you put your whole post in Spoiler tags, they won't appear in the preview.
- Please keep discussion to A SONG OF ICE & FIRE. I am not so interested in the HBO series, so if that's your bag, watch out. This is in the Books topic for a reason. I won't be held responsible for you wanting to talk AGoT the TV show and getting spoiled in here because I am talking the latest preview chapter from GRRM's website.
I put A DANCE WITH DRAGONS at #2 in the series. My ordering is:
A CLASH OF KINGS (2nd SoI&F)
A DANCE WITH DRAGONS (5th SoI&F)
A STORM OF SWORDS (3rd SoI&F)
A GAME OF THRONES (1st SoI&F)
A FEAST FOR CROWS (4th SoI&F)
That last one was a shit sandwich. Didn't like the character selections (who gives a shit about Brienne?), didn't like the story developments (Riverlands time! Zzzzz), and thought the writing was shoddy--I like GRRM handling scheming a la Tyrion a LOT more than bumbling a la Cersei. The only redeeming things from this book are: Cersei losing her shit and finding out what a douchebag Petyr Baelish actually is. I want some massive Tyrion v. Littlefinger thing to go down. Two of the best Richelieux in fiction.

Much like you can use [
tags ( i.e. [
to surround text in your post for an effect; you can use [and [
Warning: Spoiler!tags for the same effect. There is a button on the little formatting toolbar that looks like a window with a small arrow pointing down to add [Warning: Spoiler!tags to highlighted text automatically. Or you could just type [around your text.Warning: Spoiler!and [

I think my order would go 3-2-5-1-4. That chapter from the next book looks REALLY interesting. The MORE interesting thing is trying to figure out where in the timeline it fits in regards to the happenings near the end of book 5. Apparently there is also a chapter from Arianne Martell as a POV floating around that GRRM read aloud at some con or another. I haven't found it yet, but I haven't looked very hard either, heh.

I like what's going on with Jaime. He was annoyingly one dimensional compared to Tyrion, Tywin, and Cersei. But losing his sword hand cost him, and his struggles to actually do something honorable is a remarkable journey in the series.
I'll try to track down that other preview. My Google skillz are mad, yo.

Warning: Spoiler!Do you really think that Jon is dead? I know that it might seem that way, but he was the only direct link to stuff on the wall and also a character with a lot of stuff invested in so I'm not sure.
I also wonder what kind of shitstorm started after Jon was stabbed. I mean he was the guy holding the whole camp together, wildlings, black brothers, king's men. Will they have all killed each other few minutes after the incident?

Most interesting characters/chapters at the moment: Tyrion, Davos, Jamie, Arya.
Less interesting: Sansa, Reek, Cersei, Melisandre, Daenerys, everything connected to Greyjoy.
zzZZZZZzzz: everything happening in Dorne, Brienne, Bran.
Haven't read the new chapters yet.

Jon isn't dead. He's wounded but I'll wager Melisandre saves him similar to what Thoros did for Beric Dondarrion and Beric did for Catelyn Stark.
I'm wondering more about which family member is Arya going to be sent after. I think it's ineviatble. I'd wager Sansa as most likely.

Stannis is the bet written character so far. At times, Tyrion is just too clever, and I didn't buy his "Yes I killed Joffrey" moment with Jaime. But Stannis is so consistent, I never doubt what's coming out of his mouth. I would argue Sansa is the worst written character. That girls needs to shed this naivete. You'd think "Oops I killed my Dad," and the harrowing shit at King's Landing would have given her an edge, no?
I like all the stuff GRRM has set in motion: Daenerys is finally interesting again. Dragon-riding I like. The crowd of suitors headed her way is a crack up. It will be nice to get her out of there. Aegon is cool--he can make a nice case for the throne. Cersei's trial is going to be a wreck. The Citadel is interesting--not sure what happens when Winter starts. Arya and the valar morghalis people is cool--but I am worried this will go overlong as well. And of course all the craziness at Winterfell. I was getting bored to death by all the Greyjoy stuff until these last Victarion chapters. I think Aeron is interesting, but the whole Kingsmoot was just written a little long for my tastes.

I do like Stannis a lot. I have mixed feelings about Dany. I REALLY liked her transition from scared little girl being sold by her brother to khaleesi, and her clearing of the cities. Her time in Mereen wasn't super-interesting, for the most part, but I feel like she regressed a lot in book 5. The dragon riding was neat, I suppose, but she seemed like a kid again for a lot of the book: "Ohhh I want Daario but I need to marry this guy! Woe is me! I will bang them all!"
The Greyjoy crossover with Moquorro is pretty awesome to read, for sure.

I've read Joe Abercrombie's books and until then I had never really read such graphic descriptions of torture.
Theon's abuse at the hands of Ramsey Bolton fucking destroyed me. I was literally becoming sweaty and my stomach would start getting upset with each new Reek chapter. Needless to say I nearly cried when he finally jumped over the walls with the girl.
Bleh, fuck you GRRM.
I'll probably read the new chapters for the upcoming book on GRRM's website, so more comments to follow possibly.
