Help identifying a scifi series

Help identifying a scifi series was created by jay718
Years ago I read a four(I think) book series set in a future where computers had taken over and scattered humanity across the galaxies. They built a failsafe into their system which was four rings inserted into a mainframe at the same time effectively shutting down their control. The problem was the rings were all on different planets and the heroes would have to transmogrify themselves to look like the denizens of said planets. I don't even remember if the books were good or not, I'm just trying to figure out what they were called.
This has been driving me crazy for a few weeks now so I figured I'd ask here. Typing 'rings' and 'scifi' into google just directs me to Middle Earth. Chapel? Al? Any ideas? Thanks.

Were they any good? Seems like a cool idea and now I want to put them on my pile of planned reading.

No eBay APP ID défined in Kunena configuration
I was a teenager when I read them and I liked them enough to read all four books, but who knows what I would think now. There are some positive reviews on Amazon. Might be worth a look. Here's a guy selling the lot of 'em for 17 bucks shipped...
