He has excerpts from all of his novels available as free downloads . His latest novel Half a King has the first seven compelling chapters.

I read the first few chapters of his first novel a few years ago this way and became hooked.

Thanks for the head's up, I may check that out. I read Abercrombie's "First Law" trilogy, and liked them well enough. Great characters (especially Ninefingers and Glotka), but I thought his world-building was pretty conventional genre stuff.

Still, the dude is FUNNY, and that counts for a lot. Fantasy is always so fucking serious all the time. I don't care if some evil sorcerer is trying to destroy the world. Lighten up.

I read the First Law series several years ago, I recall liking the world, but never felt a strong connection to the characters, despite there being some interesting ones. I particularly liked the inquisitor guy.

I am a librarian and frequently point fans of GRRM to Abercrombie. I have yet to hear any complaint.
