I'm looking for a game I can play with the following group:

Daughter 12: Bright kid, not that into gaming.

Daughter 15: Will play Daytona 500.

Son 16: On some levels is a genius. Won't read the Netrunner rules and teach it to me. Has a little Asperger's. Can be brittle about rules.

Son 19: lives at college. Takes off when visiting when the games come out.

Wife: (age undisclosed): Usually gets in arguments with Son while playing, says I coddle him when he acts up during game play. They have been fighting during games for years.

I think if I leave the wife out of the game playing that everything is a bit smoother. The kids all LOVE anime in all its forms. The daughters don't care about Heroscape.

All of the kids like Thunder Road. They said they liked Pitchcar, but I thought it was a little dull. I could re-buy it.

I'm looking for a game that will appeal to all three kids who are still at home that won't bore me and isn't too hard to learn or teach, but still is interesting for me. Right now I'm leaning towards Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective because they all love the TV show Sherlock.

I think this is a question that is impossible to answer, really. I wonder if I could get them to play Specter Ops.

This is like the 18th game suggestion I have posted on here and I never take your advice. Please forgive me.

i have no idea what you're going to do about the 12 yr old girl, nothing will make her happy but you should appeal to her intelligence. Let her use her thinking chops and she might come around. You obviously need a NON-Ameritrash game to account for the arguments between wife and son (unless you don't want to avoid that). So you want something non-confrontational with little interaction.

Vote: Puerto Rico. i think it sounds perfect here. i don't care if you don't like it.

....ah fock, you're six?! Ok, better do Settlers of Catan with the 5-6 player expansion. Power Grid is ok but it's way too long with 6. Don't do something dumb like Risk.

It is not the Ameritrash conflict that makes them fight. They fight while playing "Black Spy" by Alan Moon. We need family therapy. Non-confrontational is probably a good idea though.

We are usually five. The oldest only visits when he is low on groceries and hungry. I miss that kid.

Power Grid is too complicated and math-y.

I appreciate your contribution nevertheless.

Takenoko

Only holds four but it appeals to my anime loving non gamer 16 year old, and the 20 year old rules lawyering older daughter. Wife thinks it's cute. Simple to learn and set up.

Seasons

Another 4 player - a bit of tracking to get used to but, anime spell casting battle game - maybe too confrontational but we like it.

I'm guessing co-ops are out of the question

For the first time ever I agree with Black Barney. Back to basics. Catan. There are reasons it is evergreen. Infinitely replayable, interaction focused, rewarding and with lots of fun luck. It will heal you;

These look cool. I forgot to mention that they like that card based story telling game whose name I can't remember that has a lot of expansions--Dixit, and they also like that Reiner Knizia game with the octagonal plastic tiles--Ingenious.

I'm not sure tabletop gaming is the direction you need to go with here. What about family outings or something? Other events everyone can do. Take up biking or hiking or metal detecting. Something everyone can participate in.

However, if you must board game...what about meeting each person where they are?

The son that will read the netrunner rules but won't teach you...why not you read the netrunner rules/watch a video and challenge him to a game? go to a tourney or organized play together. Take some of the work load of the teen and help him out. Make it a joint effort and interest instead of all on one.

The Daytona daughter...if she likes Daytona find some games for her, you, and the wife to play as a sub group. Of course, offer the others to join, but don't expect them too. Play Daytona a bunch or something similar.

The daughter that doesn't want to play a board game...don't. Join in whatever interest she has.

I'm not sure that not having the correct title is what's keeping people from wanting to play board games. Heck, some folks plain have other interests...and that's totally cool. If you really want to try a one game for everyone, I wouldn't spend a lot as it doesn't sound like a game is a solution, so something like Settlers may actually be the correct answer.

EDIT: I'm not judging or thinking there's a deeper issue. Some folks simply would rather do something else. To bad _you_ are a board game loving nerd. :/

Ticket To Ride, Bohnanza, Codenames. Those are fun, and very light on rules.

Edit: or buy the D&D 5e intro set, and rope someone into being the DM. Not being a smartass - my daughter has hinted that she wants to play, but only if she gets to DM.

Cosmic Encounter and Nuclear War are not technically family games, but they are easy enough to learn and have a good amount of interaction and replay value.

PICTOMANIA is a good time. It's like PICTIONARY except you can be shit at drawing and still do OK. My oldest is 12 and she totally digs it, the youngest player here is 7 and she can still participate meaningfully.

I second hiking. Geocaching. Pokemon Go--whatever, go outside and do shit together.

Saigo no Kane has a good anime theme and should work as a family game, except that it only handles 2 to 4 players. Sounds like 2 of your offspring aren't really interested in boardgames anyway.
