Never thought this was going to be my first topic, but here goes. I have the utmost respect for the fine people on this site and their opinions, so please do not hold back in any way:

There is an interesting position at the University of British Columbia, on their Kelowna Campus, which seems to be in the wilderness about 400 miles from Vancouver. The town (which translates as 'Grizzly Bear' in the Natives' Language) isn't too big.
Are any FAT:ties familiar with the area? We have family in Chicago and Seattle and have been to the States a couple of times, but never to Canada. Moving to live 400 miles away from the next big cultural hub seems like a big step for a family from Central Europe. My kids would have to get into Ice Hockey, I guess.

So at this point I'm asking for any information to get a better feeling for the place. Any help is appreciated.

How big is the city? I've lived in some reasonably remote locations and it all depends on how close the hub city (not the big hub, like vancouver, the one that would have the decent grocery store, restaurants, etc) for the region is and how big that hub city is. It will determine how many adjustments you have to make to your lifestyle.

FWIW, I would make the tradeoff and take a job like that in a second if it included work that paid reasonably well. I'm getting into a very hermit part of my life and if I had internet access I'd be willing to compromise a lot of other things.

edit: I just looked it up, it's quite large (150k), I think you're totally cool.

I've been to Kelowna twice but just for short visits. It's interior BC which is different. Very much country living but its a decent sized town with everything you'd need. The BC interior is beautiful. You're fairly close to Vancouver and even Calgary if you need some urban action. I'm a proud Canadian so I say take the opportunity.

I’m familiar with it and have known two different people that moved there. Both women, one was in her 30s, young and loved the wilderness and loves cities, the other is a cranky Jewish lady in her mid 40s. The younger one is an ex and she hated it. She loves city life and couldn’t believe there was no decent place to get breakfast. She moved to Colorado and is much happier now.

Now that breakfast thing may sound dumb but I totally get it. If you’re used to and appreciate city life and getting all the things a large student population gets you, then this town (not a city at all) is not for you. It’s a much older average population with all the things that come with that. No gaming community or anything (unlike Vancouver).

I would caution moving there unless you’re sure that slower lifestyle with less options is for you. I know for me, I will want to life in a place with lots of students cuz of the great stuff that comes with that.

Hope this helps

Oh and your kids don’t have to get into hockey. That’s true for any Canadian City. Just be aware that’s a big topic of conversation in social gatherings, during the season. I’d recommend getting into skiing though cuz winters become awesome if you like skiing

First off, welcome to Canada (if you take it) secondly, you'lll be 40 KMs away from Vancouver not miles as well as you'll be 400 kms away from the BEST TRASHFEST in Western Canada (well, the ONLY TRASHFEST in Western Canada). BC is a beautiful province and Vancouver is a lovely, lovely city.
