My unsocial 17-year-old wants a scooter

He is diagnosed with Asperger's. He spends a lot of time hiding from his parents, but communicates with his siblings. He wants to be independent. The only thing I've seen him show interest in is a scooter.

My neighbor, and the person who won't talk to me at work (these stories are intertwined) bought scooters for their family. Her son moved away and bought a motorcycle. Through no fault of his own he lost a leg in an accident.

My son has the attention and focus of a goldfish.

I really want him to socialize with his friends outside of school, but I don't want him to die. I wonder how much a cheap but functional car would cost.

The end.

With scooters and motorcycles, it doesn't matter who is at fault. The person on the scooter or motorcycle ALWAYS pays the price. That's important to keep in mind. Riders have ZERO protection.

The only universe in which scooters are safe are the ones that will only compare them to mopeds and motorcycles. But who cares that they are safer than those? You only want to know if they are safe, period.

Cars have many many different forms of crash protection. Scooters and bikes have none. Falling off a scooter does the same damage as falling off a motorcycle, by the way (people like to say this isn't true, but the stats show the same type of damage is inflicted).

The only way that a scooter's risk can be somewhat mitigated is if the driver is VERY aware of other vehicles and taking extreme caution at all times on main roads because other drivers aren't seeing you or looking for. I don't know much about autism, or asparagus, but I would imagine these individuals are not keenly aware (or care) about the environment around them. They also don't have the acceleration to get out of trouble.

There are probably really good creative ways you can get your son to socialize with his friends. This isn't one of them. Maybe get him a good helmet so he can ride with his friends or something, i dunno.

Coming from a guy who had a really hard time at 16 years old, I think a really beautiful move would be to get him driving lessons on the path to being able to borrow the family car when he wants (within reason). This changes the world for someone that wants independance. It's a turning point.

Édit: i talked to a coworker who has an autistic son and she says in her groups she’s heard of asperger kids drive scooters, and they very often bump the car in front of them instead of braking to a full stop. She says it’s very common. Weird how the mind works , it’s a mystery to me
