I launched a new blog!

I've been writing here for years, and many of you know that at one point I maintained an active blog called The Rumpus Room. Eventually it tapered off, partially because of my inability to keep up with current releases, and partially because of a lot of moves in a short amount of time.

Well, I've been feeling the itch to get back into writing regularly. To that end I've launched a new blog, Games Are For Everyone. This blog will talk about tabletop games, but will also dip into video games, mainstream stuff, and maybe even sports from time to time. It's really meant as an outlet for me to talk about every kind of game, and how they have impacted my life.

I'd love if you could visit and maybe leave a comment. Here's the link.

I like the idea for the blog, but I disagree with its central premise, at least by anecdote.

My mom doesn't like games. She doesn't play or watch sports. With the exception of teaching me stuff like chutes and ladders and candyland and crazy eights as a very young child, she would rarely choose to indulge in games. Closest thing I can think of would be her regular engagement in live theater, but even then, she was usually a director rather than an actor.

She's also a woman born in the 40s. So to some extent it is (or could be) a social pressure thing to give up playing card games by your teenage years and move on to other things.

I also feel like a lot of people these days are replacing gaming (and watching sports) with netflix binges.

If you could make the argument that competing for likes on FB and Insta is itself a game, your thesis looks pretty good though.

An exception to everything I guess, huh? Teach me to use absolutes.

Don't worry about it. The phrase "Games are for Everyone" isn't a diktat. It's a suggestion of inclusion; as in, no one should be excluded if they're interested. If they aren't interested, no one is requiring them to read.

Thanks for the encouragement everyone. My goal is to get something out every week. As I said in the opening entry on the blog, Games Are For Everyone is more of a baseline assumption when I write, rather than a thematic statement of purpose. Hopefully I can be true to that going forward.
