Our school district emailed this morning to announce they're hosting a community vaccination event for the newly-eligible 5-11 year olds on Monday morning.

I've never clicked the SUBMIT button on an online form harder than I did for my kids' registrations. The feeling of relief is going to be immense.

It's definitely a weird phenomenon where I see so many interviews with vaccine worried parents or whatever but on aggregate according to our statistics those people are pretty rare---most are PUMPED.

The media seems to be taking their usual low road with this.

We plan on doing the same thing with our kids, though I'm not sure if the local school is doing an event like this. But they're getting their shots ASAP, especially since our older son is immunocompromised through medication, and is getting a tonsillectomy in about a month. We need to space out his shots just so.

I'm not sure what is causing this--is it national media institutions' strong desire to appear even-handed, and/or things like local network news that loves controversial/shocking stories to get eyeballs? Something continues to give oxygen to earnest (but basically gut level, evidence-free) hesitancy and make it look like it deserves to be on an even footing with the results of all the scientific effort in this space.

You must not live in a rural area. Youtube any local fox affiliates news broadcast for Crapsburg, USA and you'll see.

There's an old FB friend of mine who actually believes that the vaccine is evidence of our government being corrupted not only by socialists, but by Satan as well. When he's not saying this or espousing the greatness of Judeo-christian morality, he is lamenting the lack of a modern Plato or Socrates to debate our pro-vaccine dogma.

I haven't muted or blocked him yet because I laugh when I read the ridiculousness of his stuff. I think he should probably be checked into a mental facility.

We wouldn't be in (any?) of our current messes if people would sign off of Facebook permanently.

As for myself, I just scheduled my covid booster. I'm doing a flu shot at the same time, a glutton for punishment I guess.

It's definitely a "both sides" media thing, where they've forgotten Asmiov's old quote (i.e. "Democracy does not mean your ignorance is the equal of my knowledge." (paraphrase)) But it's perpetuated by social media like Facebook, where Dunning-Kruger examples have free reign to keep spouting the shit that Jexik mentions. You can see physical examples of this in the QAnon crowd gathered at Dealey Plaza yesterday for the homecoming/resurrection of JFK Jr. and Robin Williams. People are so convinced that there's a grand conspiracy behind everything that even proven, basic knowledge like immunization is a plot to destroy god-fearing 'Merica. This kind of thing has always been present. It's just had fuel dumped into it by the rapidity of modern communication.

I like what Benjamin Franklin said about conspiracies: "Three may keep a secret if two are dead."

Not just the rapidity, but the fact that you can now narrow down the news and opinions you consume. You can now find people to agree with your beliefs and opinions, no matter how messed up they are (c.f. incels).

Here in CT, several years ago they got rid of the religious exemption for the childhood immunization requirement for public schools. According to the media it was super controversial. A "huge" protest was planned. Only about 30 people showed up to protest. Of those, only about 18 actually had kids enrolled in the public schools.

None of the major religions oppose vaccination.

^It was darkly comic to see the washington state coach say he was seeking an exemption and unjustly fired for not getting vaccinated due to his religious beliefs which are... Catholic. I think they should get the Pope to give a deposition about the church's explicit feelings about vaccination for the lawsuit.
