Is there an easy way to tell when you have a new PM, other than by checking the mail subsystem? The old software would show "1 new private message" at the top of every screen so it was obvious.
Apologies if there is a different but equally obvious notification that I am missing.

To see your PM notifications, click the down carat under your avatar in the black side menu of the forum. Or the logout button in the upper right corner at the top of the page.

I figured out that if I added a comment to my article I could set up a subscribe on it. But as best I can tell the subscribe feature does not send an email when someone leaves a new comment.

i don’t seem to stay logged in even though I check the box on the log in page. I’m using Safari on my iPhone.

I have to log back in a lot as well. I haven't pinpointed what the time frame is yet.

Site session expires after 200 minutes of inactivity.
Forum access rights and the new indicators are recalculated every 30 minutes. This means, for example, if you are logged onto the the site, and are inactive for 45 minutes you are still logged onto the site, and when you refresh the page, your access rights to post in the forum will be recalculated and the new buttons refreshed.
Whether or not you can automatically log back in after a period of time greater than 200 minutes is depended upon how your browser is handling your cookies. My iPhone browser is set to clear all my temp files when I close it. If I leave my browser open, after 200 minutes of inactivity, if I refresh the page the cookie for the site still exists on my phone, so I will be logged in automatically. However, if I close the browser, it erases my cookies, so I have to re-log in even if I immediately reopen the browser.
This is further complicated by the fact that sometimes we need to force logout everyone on the site and clear everyone's sessions to deal with robot spammers.

When you try to search articles by author, half of the author menu ends up off the screen to the left, so that you can't click on them (or even see most of them.) I'm using Chrome Version 79.0.3945.130 (Official Build) (64-bit) on Win10 Home.

I usually only load the "recent forum posts" and have a look there. Everything new is marked by a green button. Since not all of it is interesting to me (e.g. US tax system 
) a "mark as read" button would be greatly apreciated, if not too much of a hassle.
