It seems to be IP based as private browsing doesn't resolve the issue but using a VPN sometimes sorts things out temporarily and switching devices doesn't necessarily help. The bans happen when logged and when not. I've disabled Firefox's built in tracking protecting thinking it may be a cookie based thing but that hasn't helped.

The more useful question is 'is it happening to anyone else ?' - if nothing has been changed on the site and no one else is experiencing it then possibly your system/network issue.

Beyond specific browser based policies I don’t see how it’d be on my end. The server is responding with 403s so I’m completing a network round trip; it applies across multiple (at least three) ISPs so isn’t due to any particular traffic shaping policies and applies when my phone is using 4G.

It sounds exactly like Sag’s reported problem so at least two of us have been affected. Opening multiple tabs is an almost guaranteed way to trigger it and the typical ban lasts about 30-60 seconds which sounds inline with flood control policies.

I picked up an IP ban back in June when I came back from vacation and opened some tabs to catch up. As far as I can tell it never went away.

Applies to any device going through my router's IP, so even my phone on wifi (but not cellular). Eventually I started routing through a VPN node (which is how I'm posting this). Sometime I'll forget to start it if I reboot my laptop and wonder if TWBG is down, then remember it's just me.

It put a bit of a dent in my visits, that's for sure. I just get an eventual timeout, not even a 403 from the server.

Sorry everyone. I have had some not good stuff in my life, and just haven't had the mental or emotional bandwidth for much of anything, so the queue is backed up and I haven't dug into this flood control problem. I am taking next week off and hope to be able to get my shit together and get the site back on track.

Take your time, please. Sure, it is one of two sites I visit daily but look after yourself first, that's way more important. Thanks for everything you did here.

Hi, every time I click on something it takes about ten seconds for the site to respond.

I suspect the root cause of this is that the site is underfunded, and as a result held together through the heroic efforts of burned out volunteers, or volunteer.

Maybe the site needs a Patreon so it is easier to sign up for recurring donations? I don't know.

If you click the Donate button at the bottom of the page there's a checkbox to make it monthly.

For the price of a cup of coffee at Starbucks you could feed a website desperately in need.

I’ve been doing battle with bots for the past few days, and have had to reboot the site several times.
