This morning they handled three spambots that flooded us with over 500 spam posts.

Thank you so much!

How is that supposed to work? I'm some spammer, I scripted some accounts to spam for me and I bombard a site like this with 500 Viagra ads or whatever. How does this monetize anything? Does someone need to click through? Are they loading beacons in pixels? What's the upside to this?

I have no idea what was going on with this. The IPs were from Japan, and the posts were all in Japanese (I think - it looked like one bot was posting with a different set of characters than the other). There were no links in the posts. The links were in the titles, which makes them non-links. So they were sophisticated enough to get through two firewalls and our flood projection and create some chaos, but overall kind of stupid if their goal was to monetize anything or even plant some backlinks.

ETA: Also, forum spammers are typically getting paid to post x number of posts, or plant x number of back links, so they kind of don't care if what they are getting paid to post is stupid.

It was kinda funny. I checked in from the office this morning and the first two pages were spam. So, I wiped them out, knowing there would be more and looked in a couple threads I'd been in last night, came to the front, and it was almost all spam again. I think Chris, Gary, and/or Wade were on by then, too, because I'd do some work for a few minutes and then check back and it varied between a page full and only a couple. I had the same question as jeb: What are these idiots getting from this? But, yeah, if they're getting paid per post (that has to be a miserably low rate...), I guess it makes some sort of sense.

The spam was insane, you guys did a great job!

I wonder if it's not a scam in and on itself. That is, it's not that you make a lot of money from people clicking the links, it's that you ask someone for money to "promote" their site, spam the web and then don't care if their 5000 hits end up being worthless.

Most of the ones I saw were Korean, but mine could have been a different batch. What I am curious about is some of them had view numbers between 4 and 8. Who the heck was actually looking into the threads? Were they unique visitors or just AmeriTrashers on a lark?

I deleted about 300 while I ate breakfast. I have no idea what they were for as I didn't read any of them.

Almost gone now, great job mods! The ones I am seeing are defintely Hangul script (Korean). There have been Korean language forum spam attacks since 2014 or so. Formerly associated with BAMWAR domains, this current wave looks to popularize BIS## domains. Either for SEO effect or perhaps malware loading.

Crawlers comb the internet indexing pages for Search. Likely machines reading machine generated posts.

The Korean must have been the character set I didn't recognize. We just got hit with a fourth bot with a Philipinnes IP tonight. I've turned on the stinking CAPTCHA for new users to post in the forum. Hope it at least slows them down and that our stinking key is still valid.
