Star Wars: Armada Review

It takes about a New York minute between seeing a copy of the X-Wing base game and wondering what a Star Destroyer model might look like at that scale. In that minuscule time frame, Star Wars: Armada became an inevitability.

Armada has been getting almost universally good reviews from the people I trust who discuss it... with the same caveats.

Thinking about it as a miniatures game a la Games Workshop may be the best way to approach it with respect to cost. I think it partially suffers even on that front because X-wing is so much cheaper.

Good review. I agree with much of what you say except for the fact this is a much better game than X-Wing. I'd choose X-Wing any day of the week as that feels more cinematic, more like the source material. It's never gamey as you suggest Armada is and it's more indicative of what we see on screen.

Glad you liked the review. I meant better game as in "strategy game": I agree with everything you say. It's just sometimes (often) I find myself wishing x-wing just had a little bit more depth. Armada has a lot more, which is a shame in some ways as it might have been nice to have a middle ground.

That was a really well written, informative review, Matt.

Thanks Matt. You covered all the bases. This one really wasn't on my radar, but you've managed to put it there.

I just played it for the first time last night. I was afraid of liking this game and I was right to do so, it's awesome.
