Fantasy Flight Games wrote: Battles in Runebound are fast and tactical, using an innovative, token-based combat system. Each hero has a number of combat tokens, and when you engage in battle, you take all of your combat tokens in your hand and cast them like dice or flip them like coins. Once both you and your opponent have cast combat tokens, you take turns spending combat tokens to deal damage to your opponent, shield incoming attacks, flip your own or an opponent’s tokens, or stack your tokens to increase their power.

Both heroes and enemies also have a number of surge abilities that you may trigger during battle with surges from your combat tokens. The possible effects are nearly limitless, and deciding which surge abilities to use and when is crucial to winning your battles in Terrinoth.

This could be really good.

I really like the recent Fantasy Flight's streamlining. The flip-based combat sounds funny at first, but now with stacking mentioned, I'm very interested.

The token combat system might make the game play clunky from a solo perspective. I noticed the box says 2-4 players while Runebound 2.0 said 1-6 players.

I love Runebound 2.0, but the box should have said: WARNING: 1-2 players only, otherwise DOWNTIME SUCKS and you will REGRET LIFE.

Joke.

The way to make Runebound playable is simple: Buy 4 sets of the movement dice. While one player is playing their battle, the other players can continue playing. Downtime becomes minimal. Now, there's not much player interaction anyhow, so you don't lose anything.

That's how I've always played, and I love it.

POG combat can suck a bag of dicks.

In our games, each player does have their own set of movement dice, but simultaneous play ruins a game for me. If I can't laugh at someone when they die, it just isn't fun.

It's a BWW store championship fantasy football league award.

Tried this at GenCon. I didn't like it. The token flipping mechanic is neat and adds some choices to your combat, but the downtime is still built into the game. This is more of a retrofit than a new Edition as it seems the only other major change that I saw in my brief run-through was categorized adventure cards.
