Ballerina - Barney's Incorrect Five Second Reviews

I think the American release of this movie changed the name to "Leap!" but i'm not 100% sure. Anyway, this is a very cute and fun movie about young orphans in France finding and pursuing their dreams. Nothing really new on that front.

The animation is beautiful but when it gets to the dancing numbers, it seems obvious they didn't use any motion-capture as the movements are heavily robotic and artificial. That's a problem when the movie is about dancing. When they slow it down, it's very graceful, but at normal speed it doesn't look or feel real at all which is a problem. We might be getting a little spoiled with the quality of animation lately. I don't know if you saw the animated short, Piper, but it's hard not to think you're actually watching a little bird in the ocean. Incredible.

My 6-yr old girl liked this movie well enough so it for sure gets a passing grade and I even had a moment where a tear fell, so kudos to the filmmakers on that one.

I read interviews where they mention that their budget was a fraction of what other animation studios usually have, so some compromises had to be made - they couldn't have scenes with tons of extras for instance.

look at the image I uploaded. The art of early Paris was pretty remarkable too. It looks like a big budget animation movie but yeah I'd be curious if the winner of best animated short, Piper, had a bigger budget than this movie. It costs $30 million US to make Ballerina. I don't know how much it costs to make the 6 minutes of Piper but the technology is incredible. There are 4-7 million individual fibres on that little bird's body, which makes it look so fluffy. And at 24 frames per second. Crazy.

It was great, you got into the story as well as into the spirit of the movie. It was a nice classical animation film and it shows that, indeed, you can make a great one with a small budget. Very beautifully executed and the funny. It has an unexpected romantic aspect to it that can make tears flow from your eyes.
And yes, it is called Leap!
It deserves much more than a passing grade ;)
