Misfits (Season 1) - Tow Jockey Five Second Review

We've been taught that when a young person is suddenly...

We've been taught that when a young person is suddenly gifted with extraordinary powers by the hand of fate they will, naturally,  decide to use those powers for the good of all mankind or perhaps they turn power mad and wish for global domination and must be thwarted. That's what the fat cats in "Big Comic Book" would have us believe but on the mean streets of a blighted city in England it isn't necessarily so. The kids in Misfits aren't heroes nor are they arch villains. They are what were once called "rotten little punks". They are distasteful petty law breakers without the ambition to even become full on criminals. Their one interest is to finish out their court mandated community service and get on with their lives of dissipation. Just because a mystical storm rolls through town and gives super powers to all and sundry doesn't change that fact. They are still jerks, just jerks that can do unnatural things. The first season is only six episodes long but in that time we are allowed to watch as these five losers bond and find a low sort of nobility in their willingness to protect and aid one another and in that way become a little less despicable. It is, in the end, a super hero show and so you must be willing to suspend your disbelief about some things such as why such an astonishing amount of people die or go missing in and around a community center but there aren't a thousand government agents there to find out why but if you can do that the show is worth the watch. There is a wry, very British, sense of humor that helps to mitigate the rather bleak tone of the show and, while you won't be standing and cheering at the end, you might just chuckle.
