Have you ever found yourself on a busy road deep...

Have you ever found yourself on a busy road deep in traffic and just for a moment thought of all those other people? All of them going somewhere, doing something. Each with their own story, their own concerns, their own triumphs and their own tragedies. Grand Hotel does this. It gives us a glimpse at the lives of some of the people who for various reasons find themselves renting rooms at the most luxurious hotel in Berlin. Each has their own story and their own drama but over the coarse of one weekend they briefly intertwine in poignant, touching and tragic ways. There is desperation, isolation, and dispair in great abundance but there are also brief shinning moments of happiness and love. The direction and acting are stupendous. Joan Crawford, Lionel and John Barrymore, Greta Garbo and Water Beery make up the cast and their names are legend for a reason. It won best picture in 1932 back when that award still meant something. It is a movie that will leave you sad but not without hope. A lot like life.
