Great review! My girlfriend and I still have a lot of Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective to get through, but this could be an eventual purchase. Portal Games' Detective looks neat, too.

But you can pull this game out again in a couple of years and it is going to feel just as fresh and engaging then because it isn't going to age like the flavor-of-the-week worker placement offering will.

This is why I read your reviews. The value-add on that line alone is worth the price of admission.

I've never played Sherlock Holmes completely by the rules. Both with gamers and with family, we've always focused on the story and the whodunnit without worrying about counting steps. The game becomes more facile, more social that way, focusing more on enriching the story than "winning". I've had sessions where we burned an entire evening playing multiple mysteries and everyone was looking to continue the next morning.

This sort of thing has really been delightful gaming for me, so a change of venue with the same spirit of play will be warmly welcomed.

Does the box specify that it is a 2nd edition?

Well, that’s sort of weird. I had heard that the new edition had a Grey Fox logo on the box. I got the review copy in from Grey Fox and it had an 8th Summit logo on it so I was like “well crap”. But the rulebook says second edition, and I checked through the errata and it had all of the fixes in place. But there are Grey Fox-branded copies out there. So I would say to be safe get one of those.

Excellent info. Thanks!
I Kickstartered this game. I briefly looked through the components and was impressed. Prior to playing, I learned of some typos, and got cold feet. I've just been waiting to print errata. Or now, I guess I could pick up the 2nd edition.

We just played this tonight (8th Summit version) and really enjoyed it. It was so good, I think we may have to play the second scenario after dinner.

Bless your dark heart.

I will proceed with my 1st edition, typos be damned. My plan; bring over two book worm friends, and play this game in my library with glasses of scotch.

I just checked the errata that is up on BGG. Looks like I may have a copy like Michael's. My copy doesn't have the errors (at least those listed for the map and first scenario), however, the box says 8th Summit on it. I haven't checked the rules book to see if it says 2nd edition or not.

If it were me, and I had the edition with the errors, I'd get the errata and make the map corrections directly on the map, because why not. It's just paper. Then when you go to read a paragraph number, check if the paragraph number is also in the errata for that scenario. It's kind of thematic, since you are investigators, so checking an additional document isn't out of the realm of possibility.

After you play the first scenario, if this solution really annoys you, I heard that MM (which is where I got my copy) is selling Mythos Tales for like $12.

I'm not sure getting a copy even now is a guarantee you'll get the printing with the corrections. I was given a copy at the end of July, and a quick check said it's one of the old uncorrected copies. So the old ones are still out there in circulation, which is lame.

Yikes.

Good news is that Miniature Market now specifically says that it is 2nd printing on their Mythos Tales Listing on their site.
Bad news, it is no longer on sale and back up to $28.

Is all of the 2nd printing “error free,” or are there various versions of it?

Oh, I know I have typos. I Kickstarted this title.
And I seem to recall that even the 2nd edition had typos. They fixed a handful of known errors, but then added all new ones!
NOTE: I only read this somewhere. I have no source.
