Well that was unsettling. Took me four days to come down from this movie and land in a safe enough place to be able to think about it again to write a review.

Totally agreed. One of the best horror films from recent years and it was all the better knowing almost nothing of the plot beforehand.

Do you like the thumbnail I chose? I agonized for ten minutes trying to decide which image would be best. There were some really creepy choices but they had spoilers in them. I think the one I chose is a pretty good representation of what watching the movie is like.

Yes, that is a good choice. Unsettling.

Such a great, disturbing movie. Good review, although I think you undersell how great all of the performances are.

Pete, lol yeah I find the headshot pics might be a little too big cuz for a five-second review, it tends to take up too much real estate on the page

Greg, you're probably right and it was intentional. Everyone is talking about Toni Collette's performance. How it might even have Oscar potential. i agree that she's near-perfect, but for some strange reason Gabriel Byrne's subtle performance hit me far harder. This control-freak borderline-OCD father who is supposed to have his household in relative control. So watching him try to hang on to sense and control... i found you could really feel it. When he starts no longer reminding people to take off their shoes when they come in, you start to realize in his own way he;s coming apart as well and is becoming vulnerable as well.

man... i just loved him in this. But if I talk about him too much, then I feel i am underselling Toni Collette which I don't want to do. I didn't the boy was anything special. For me it was all about the parents.

and the cinematographer.... keeping a focus on a pole on the side of the road... stuff like that. It's almost a performance in itself. Yikes.

I hear what you're saying, but I thought both children were very strong. The son has a powerful subtlety, much like Byrne, that actually becomes stronger in the final act.
