Ha ha! Yep. I love that. I really like that guy’s videos- he does an excellent job of being highly critical and enumerating what the value of a MTG product is for different types of players.

I really like the guy because he's, for lack of a better description, both caring and wholesome. He has this kindness in how he does his content that I feel is extremely valuable. The criticism is actually an example of that, the guy cannot give a bad product a pass because it would be cynical and uncaring. He cares about Magic and his audiience and the way he transmist that is something to keep in mind.

It may seem weird but I've been binging his video these few days. As someone who often comes as vicious in his criticism without meaning to, I think I can learn a thing or two from him.

Oh yeah, I did that toward the end of last year myself. At first I was like "who the hell is this guy"...but I realized that I really liked that he SMILED a lot and seemed to genuinely care about the game not just for longtime veterans but also for folks just getting into it. There is definitely a kindness about him that I think is really appealing, and I especially appreciate how instructive his stuff is. I do think that he focuses too much on FNM/organized play commentary sometimes, but really that's an issue with me and not the content- which needs to address those topics. But yes, he comes down hard on junk product in a way that is more constructive than usual and he always offers alternative advisement. His enthusiastic video on the Guild decks had me run around on a Sunday afternoon to find them all.

Haha, it was only a matter of time.

Game is great. Been playing with friends and on Crucible. Got a new Brobnar/Dis/Shadows deck that seems pretty strong. It wins about 70% of the time on Casual online, but gets crushed 90% by some stuff going on in "competitive." Witch of the Eye (untamed) and Inspiration (sanctum) was the newest combo I just had to laugh at as it stopped at the rule of 6. In a deck with 4 horsemen no less...

Set two got announced a couple days ago. 204 new cards, 166 carry over cards. New keywords (Alpha and Omega have to played first and last respectively, Deploy can be placed in any position on the battle line not just on the flank), new Maverick style system called Legacy where noncarryover cards from set 1 can still show up. New starter set nixes the preset decks, includes 2 decks, paper play mats, and tokens instead of the stun/power cards, Costs $25.

I'm in for new stuff but it's weird for this game since I haven't even seen a tenth of the stuff in the first set yknow.

Also I got a couple new decks the other day and this one seems brutal . It's 5-0 so far.

Nice that they made a better starter set. I may have to try this game now.

How does this Maverick Legacy thing work? I've never heard of that before.

I really like the look of the new starter, and I like the idea of bringing cards forward into the new release. And the Maverick thing is a great idea.

But it still seems to me that if you aren’t playing in an active scene and under the understanding that the decks are effectively disposable, then there may not be something here for the at home player.

Still, I think I’ll get one of the starters to see what’s new.

This is more up my alley. The first starter seemed like a bad buy. PreCons? Cards over tokens? Blarg. Felt like I was buying two packs for $20 and $20 for a playmat. No thanks.

I'll get this though. Looks good.

So currently cards have a very rare chance of showing up in the wrong house as Mavericks. In the new set that is still a thing. They are also adding Legacy cards now, which are cards from set 1 that are not in the set of 166 set 1 cards being carried forward into set 2. Presumably every non carryover card has a very rare chance of showing up in set 2 as a Legacy card (though I'd bet money that some problematic cards have a 0% chance).

Yep, they just fantasy-flighted it. Time to cut my losses.

Neck deep in lingo and half a dozen new baby rules to add to the play.

Would you say that 3 new keywords is an onerous burden for a new set of cards?

This is a fair complaint, but KEYFORGE is so light on rules compared to most CCGs; it's like it's barely there. I played MtG for years, decades! I was a DCI Judge! But the game is practically a mystery to me now. That's a rules-heavy world over there, yeesh.

I am not going to go to the store and play KEYFORGE. It will never happen. I tried introducing it to some co-workers and it was a total flop. The game is going to see play in my house, with my kids, and there's nothing so complicated there that we can't all have a good time with a few packs.

It's not a burden, it's a harbinger of things to come. I deal with technicalities all day at work, I don't want to do it on my time off.
