Flash Back Friday - Family Gaming - What Do You Play on the Holidays?

More
23 Nov 2018 10:21 #286715 by ubarose

Its the day after Thanksgiving, and yesterday, after clearing the plates from our feast, our family played Scattergories, Cockroach Poker and Heck Meck.  When I was a kid, it would have been Monolpoly, Dominos or Blackjack. In later years these games were replaced by Trivial Pursuit and Pictionary. The games we play after holiday feasts may have changed, but the fun we have hasn't.

Do you play games with family on Thanksgiving? If so what do you play?

We are at six games of The Mind. My little cousin, who almost immediately masters everything he touches, for to level 11 with me on the first game. I’m teaching him MTG and Keyforge today.

We also have already gotten in a full campaign of Space Marine Adventures. Forbidden Sky, and Vegas.

Probably at least one 4 player game of Gaslands is in the offering over the weekend as well.

Thanks for reminding me about The Mind. I could see that being a great game to play with family.

On Thanksgiving proper I try to bring out a game all folks, young and old, can enjoy. This year we played four rounds of eight-player Apples to Apples and a good time was had by all.

The day after Black Friday is EVIL SATURDAY in the NeonPeon household, on which I try to round up the largest group I can at my house for the most epic gaming we can handle. This year we're up to the 11th annual EVIL SATURDAY Game Day. Unfortunately for reasons I don't understand, interest has waned in the last couple of years, and it looks like this year the group is just going to be me, my son (10 years old) and my best friend. I used to get about 8-10 friends and family members. One time eight of us played a special Dungeonquest map that supports eight players, made by someone on BGG and it was a blast. This year the three of us may put Fury of Dracula on the table, but mostly we'll play it by ear. I'd like to try Dune, which I just procured this year, but I'm thinking we'll want more players for that.

We did our traditional Thanksgiving Shogun game which I managed to win despite being set up as the Red player. Century spice road made an appearance with everyone finishing within 5 points of each other. Anomia was it's typical hit but I just can't get past the "interrupt the other person speaking" aspect. (Aka, I lost).munchkin loot letter and pictionary also were played.

Usually it’s a more mass friendly game like Scattergories or Pandemic. This year has been Villainous though.

Thanksgiving has never really been a game holiday for my family. Christmas though, absolutely. We play loads of stuff, but the big thing is our annual game of Chinatown. Last year we even got my mom to play and she does not play games. Went very well, as it always does. That box is magic.

We did Happy Salmon, Werewords, Kaleidos, and Coconuts - all with six players. Then, we played a bunch of Jackbox games.

Other holiday gaming with family often includes Junk Art, When I Dream, Time's Up! Title Recall!, Word Slam, and Codenames.

The last few years have been dominated by Crokinole and Flick em Up

This year it was all Fireball Island (reprint edition)

Except for about a two hour break to go do an escape room, I’ve been playing MTG with my 12 year old cousin all day. I had planned to show him Keyforge too, but he wasn’t interested.

I started him off last night with a couple of mono Rookie decks, but this kid is some kind of prodigy. I take him out to shoot a bow, he’s bullseyeing ever third arrow. We play Rock Band, he plays the absolute hardest drum charts and 90%+ then. So he picked up on MTG right away and I moved him up to the more complex battle decks right away. He got the idea of playing ramp and control decks without missing a beat.

So much fun...I think I hooked him on it he’s definitely a Dimir (UB) player.

Not a ton of gaming, but Azul has been a consistent success. We played two games straight a the expat Thanksgiving gathering we had yesterday.

Perudo (Liar's Dice), and Cockroach Poker. Then it broke up into dominos and KeyForge.

Played quite a bit of Cockroach Poker and Heck Meck, and I have you wonderful individuals to thank for making me aware of them. I also picked up Shaky Manor on a whim and it went over really well with the kids and adults. I might have to pick up another box, so that eight can play.
