I'll shallowly agree with what almost everyone has said.

Gaming is about playing games you like with people you enjoy. The kind of game is completely up to you. No game (or genre) is intrinsically better than any other.

It's also interesting to see gaming interests evolve over time, which happens to everyone - and is frequently due to the natural phases of one's life.

I'm young and have lots of free time: Long, complex games are awesome!

I have a baby or toddler: I'll never game again! See also: Long, complex games are terrible! Shorter is better!

I have preteens: Family and fun games are amazing, including co-ops!* And some solo games look interesting!

I have teens: Family and fun games are still amazing, but - you know what - some deeper Euros aren't bad either!

My kids are old and moved out: Geez, what happened to my life?

I'm retired: Wargames and other long, complicated games are awesome! And uh, where did all my friends go?

*Bonus realization: I'm raising people, not potential opponents! So it's OK if my kids hate games!

"the first fantasy adventure game (and in some ways, war game) that I can think of that features an all-female cast of characters"

One Deck Dungeon's characters are all female.

Ah! You are absolutely right, I forgot all about that! And that is an excellent game, I play it pretty frequently on my phone.
