Value for Money - Are Board Games Worth It?

I get your point. I actually have seen people bringing Hugh Jass games to group gatherings basically to show them off (and, uh, I guess to play them.) Someone showed up a few months back with a fully-KSed copy of Heroes of Land, Sea, and Air and you could tell he was just reveling in letting the whole thing sprawl out across the table. And that's kool and the gang. People do it with their houses, cars, golf clubs, Magic cards, game jerseys, and everything else that people take an interest in. I totally understand the impulse.

Getting back to Sag's point is the question of where the value lies in the game itself. If it's contained in dozens or hundreds of replays with minimal components, great. If it's really in the horde of plastic dudes, well, maybe not so much unless you're just into that kind of thing. I can think of a lot of games that I've gotten hours upon hours of play out of that had nothing but pretty basic stuff, like Guildhall and Neuroshima Hex... but that's not what those games were really trying to do, either. In the same way that 40K is about moving cool models around on the table, games like Rising Sun and The Others are also about moving cool models around on the table, as well as being good games. If you think that said games are too expensive because of their plastic, you might want to consider that they're simply not your type of game in the first place, especially if you look back at what you regularly play and realize that you prefer the simple games, anyway.

Wow! It's great to see that my article spawned such a long and varied discussion. It shows how differently we all feel about what's available to us and how we like or dislike what some publishers do when it comes to producing games that cost a lot and how we may think we really need to pay the extra, but then are disappointed or don't actually use everything that comes in the box to its full potential.

Thank you to everyone who has taken part in this discussion - and that everyone stayed constructive and kept the conversation civilized.

The value of a game is ..... how much enjoyment you and your family/friends get out of it.

Oddly enough, this isn’t a consensus in the hobby.

And some people in the US believe the virus is a hoax or wearing a mask is against their constitutional rights ... can't explain everyone, we're all different. But I believe Oliver was after opinions and that's the best I can do  .
