What prompted...

AJ Le Brun runs Able Table Gaming, a tabletop review and advice site. With a focus on accessibility, AJ is focused on trying to draw attention to the difficulties folk like AJ experience in gaming establishments, attending conventions, and interacting with the hobby in general.

I wanted to get AJ’s perspective on the rise in online gaming as it pertains to the disabled gamers amongst us, how conventions can do better in the future, and her own experience in the hobby.

Good interview. That picture in the middle is proof you don't need a mouth to smile.

Fantastic article and something that needs to be brought to the attention of event organizers across the board (no pun intended).

This was a great read and enlightening in a few things I hadn’t considered. Nice to hear such a different perspective.

And nice to see such a different subject matter here.

It is interesting because some of her recommendations are counter to what I would consider to be a nice game con (big brightly lit room where you can see everyone) but having a screened off private game area probably isn't too difficult to implement. ADA access should really be expected at any public venue in the US at this point but certainly spacing of tables and chairs can make it challenging for 100% access to every place in the room. ASL interpreters is just not gonna happen, that would be a large cost increase for probably very little need unless there are some helpful volunteers. I'd also throw in spanish translation, as that is virtually always overlooked and depending on your area is a significant barrier to welcoming in new players.

There are problems with allowing service animals, since there can be significant confusion between a trained service animal and just a 'comfort' animal that may lack crowd interaction skills and come in a wide variety of species. Consideration of folks with animal dander allergies is also an issue. But a lot of food for thought in setting up a con, choosing an appropriate venue, and how to advertise though. Ultimately the organizers have to decide how much more the ticket price will be for everyone to accommodate a relatively small percentage of potential attendees.

With a ruleset that big, you can't expect it to. And much of it is counter-intuitive. It's really a game that you grow into over years.

I take it back, I'd be willing to pay a $10 premium for that to happen :)
