 Yes, this game is from 2009, so over 10 years...

The forest ratmen were on the loose, overrunning the land and pushing out stout elves, heroic dwarves and berserk trolls wherever they found them. As the ratmen invaded region after region, other factions left this world, but not for long. They only retreated for a little while as they regrouped and then returned with fresh vigour but reduced strength. The battle was on and there wasn't much room for everyone on the map. After all, it was a Small World by Days of Wonder.

I like small world quite a bit though I think I sold off all my stuff for it.

The colonizer theme is mostly obscured by the whimsical nature of the races which is good. A more gritty or even historic retheme wouldn't go over as well these days I think.

SMALL WORLD is a reimplementation of VINCI, which was loosely based on the Viking era in Northern Europe. IIRC there were a few slight tweaks but the overall mechanics were the same. I like VINCI a bit better; the Shrek like graphics of SW are a turn off, but I can see how they make it appealing to a wider user group.
