Pointless Co-operation

The article was inspired by my mum, who asked me...

Staunch competitive players may feel that co-operative games are a bit pointless. After all, it makes more sense if there is only one winner, rather than several, or so their reasoning might go. However, even if you love co-operative games and even if you prefer them to competitive games, there are some games where you don't feel like you're achieving anything - and that might feel pointless to you. In this article, I want to look at this in a little more detail.

I enjoy both cooperative and competitive games. My usual "goal" is having fun, so if the game helps facilitate that, it was definitely not pointless.

I have found that in cooperative games, I have the most fun when we win at the LAST possible moment. It all comes down to this final die roll, flip of the card, etc. It's much more dramatic than knowing you are going to fail miserably, or even win easily.

Firstly, as a long time player of Spades, Hearts, and Euchre, The Crew is a very enjoyable deviation from the standard. I like the puzzle aspect of it coupled with the limited communication. In that regard, having experience in other trick taking games can help you intuit what and why a person is leading with a card or why they threw off at a certain point. For newcomers to trick taking games, that bit of insight may be lost or maybe framed differently. I have avoided 'hobby-game' trick taking card games since I'd rather play the old standards, but the co-op and challenge parts of The Crew got me to take a chance. I'm glad I did.

As to the general co-op attitude, I enjoy co-op and adversarial games in equal measure. There are great stories to be told within the co-op space that everyone at the table can enjoy. Stories from single winners are not nearly as fun to recount....or listen to.

I like Judo. I also like basketball.

I like competitive games. I like co-operative games.

The premise is identical, really.

Thank you all for your comments. I think we all agree: as long as a game is fun, it doesn't matter if it's co-operative or competitive or whatever. It's definitely not pointless.
