Bad Terraforming
If you've followed me for a while, you will...

So sometimes you play a game and you just don't get on with it. That's understandable, because not every game is for everyone. At the same time, I do think there is a game for everyone. I also think that games deserve a second chance. In this article, I want to look at why we might bounce off games and why the game experience is a lot better when we play the game again at some point later.

One of the first games I played almost 15 years ago at a game store was Tigris and Euphrates. I had no idea what I was doing and left the evening with a headache. A few weeks later the store had a storewide auction and I won a copy of T&E, I was determined to learn it. I did and LOVED it, I taught to my gaming buddies and it is still one of our most played games to date.

I consider myself a discerning board gamer. I don't need to win a game to consider it a good game, and I can probably detect a quality game even if my first play of it was problematic, probably because somebody got a rule wrong or I failed to grasp the significance of an element early on. But otherwise, I have better things to do with my time than to play a game that I probably won't enjoy.

I know this isn't quite the same as giving a game another try, but I gave the eurogame genre numerous chances, and was still disappointed by game after game. I even won some of those games, but disliked the paper-thin themes and the non-interactive play. Maybe there are good things about eurogames that I simply lack the capability to appreciate, much like I lack the ability to enjoy the taste of cauliflower.

Whoa, hey, look, I understand everyone is mad, and emotions are running high, but let's not say things we can't take back, like comparing filthy eurogames to a perfectly fine brassica vegetable. Cauliflower has done NOTHING to earn this scorn, and I think we all need to just take a time-out before tempers flare any further, srsly.

Wow, I know modern online discourse can be VERY harsh, but I didn't come here for this, it's just too much.

Coincidentally it was just last week that I randomly learned from someone that kale, cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, collard greens, brussels sprouts, et al are all just Brassica oleracea. Mind cruciferously blown.

Exactly! When you're married to a Master Gardener you learn these fun things.
