Actions you will take on your turn are activated by...

So, you've played Wingspan.

Are you a Indigo Montoya player

Or

Are you one of those players who played it and went “I want more of the crunchy stuff. More tracks, a different way to take actions and could you please change it to dragons?”

Oddly specific, I know. But if you fall into the second camp, or simply want “Moar but different” Wyrmspan has you covered.

Nice review.

Because of how this broke into the mainstream, it makes total sense that people would be looking for something Wingspan related that busted into more complex hobby territory. But it's definitely "just play a different, more complex, game" territory for me already in the hobby space.

It most definitely is. I hope the new expansion gives it wings to fly on its own.

"... gives it wings to fly on its own." Keepin' the puns up, even in the responses.

I haven't tried it and all of the people I asked about it said that it was just a more complicated Wingspan. The main reason I wasn't fond of the latter is the lack of interactive play, which I was told doesn't really change in this sequel/version/edition, so that's kind of a non-starter for me, as you acknowledge. You are right, though, that a good chunk of the appeal of Wingspan is the art and information on the cards. If they included a 20+ page guide, they probably could have followed in the path of the predecessor and put those "facts" on the cards. The game still sounds appealing because dragons, but I'll probably still pass. Also, what is the expansion supposed to be introducing?

Always.

I'd just be rehashing the press release on the expansion. Space Biff just posted a review of it, I'm sure he is a insightful as ever.

Btw, the inspiration for the review title is a Faith No More song.

Solid review.

Wingspam
Finspam
Wyrmspam

I can do this all day, and apparently so can Jamey Stegmaier.

I enjoy Wingspan because it is nearly effortless, and appeals to casual gamers. It’s a pleasant social experience, with a little die rolling and the occasional hate draft. Wyrmspan pretty much negates all the reasons I would play Wingspan.

If I want to play something a bit more complex than Wingspan with more experienced gamers, I’ll pick something other than Wyrmspan. If someone wants to play it, I’d be okay playing it, but I have so many other games of the same weight sitting on my shelves that I would prefer to play. So I give it a solid “meh.”

The thing I like about Wingspan that will not work with other versions of the game is that I love playing Wingspan with Birders. It's so much fun watching them completely nerd out about the Birds they play. I have 2 gamer friends that are married to Birders so Wingspan make Couple game night work.
