When you...

My Trick Taking Origin Story would be me watching my parents, aunts, uncles and their friends play endless hours of Pinochle and Hearts when I was growing up. But in this case, the Trick Taking and Origin Story in question involves the backstory of super heroes, adding game bending powers to a tableau and revealing your heroes final form in a race for points.

Your reaction is basically the same as another trick-taking superfan: Dan Thurot. He also came to the conclusion that it's a decent game but nothing is particularly compelling about it. In other words, pretty similar to my usual reaction to Stonemaier's stuff. Also, that artist you might be thinking of for the New Mutants in the mid-80s is probably Bill Sienkiewicz. His approach was a radical departure from standard superhero stuff and I recall disliking it, as well, since it seemed like he was usually trying to paint a picture (aka graphic artist) as opposed to tell a story (aka comic artist.) He's a talented guy and I think some of his later work on books like Elektra was more appropriate, but his New Mutants just left me cold.

So what are these games trying to bring to the table that traditional trick-takers aren't?

I appreciate The Crew is cooperative and that's a significant difference. But I look at what you're talking about here and at Camelot and see a lot of extra "stuff" that doesn't strike me as adding to the recipe. It just seems to be an exercise in convincing you that a game you play with a regular card deck isn't good use of very little of your money.

Yes, that is exactly who I was thinking of. It was such a departure in style from the rest of the X-men stuff at the time, I was like "This is not at all what I want."
