Many modern games have three distinct phases of execution: setup,...

Often considered among the best of the GIPF Project and the only one known to have organized play, DVONN is a look at what winning does or doesn't mean.

I am just in tune enough with the memes that I got that. I don't know how, since I don't do the wrestling, but I got it.

Best game in the series.
Much is made of the setup phase here. Note that the spiritual sequel Tzaar ditched that in favour of random setup and that Dvonn is also commonly played with random setups in online settings (i.e. on Littlegolem). I actually prefer random setup. Over enough games the Luck of the draw evens out anyway, and in asynchronous online play, setup is mostly just tedious. The 'game itself' i.e. movement is the truly fun part.

Yeah, I talked a lot about the setup phase because it used to be part of the organized league play that took place for a couple years after the game's release. But it was kind of tedious and I've almost always played with random placement, too. Good to hear from someone who's familiar enough with the series to pick a favorite.
