Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell: A Board Game of English Magic

Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell is one of the best fantasy novels I've ever read. So I was pretty excited to read this, although I have zero idea how they could really bring that world and those characters to life in a game. It seems a poor fit. Still, fingers crossed.

Did you watch the BBC version of this from a couple of years ago?

Looks to he a sort of semi-coop. Don't let the bad guy win, but still be the best magician.

Osprey are doing good stuff. I dont think it will be a huge thematic immersion into the world of the novel, but I think the spirit of the thing will be in the right spot. Here's hoping anyway.

I'm all for inclusion of different genders, but Miss Redruth? The 4th magician should have been Childermass, imo.

They couldn't bring the characters to life in the television show, hopefully the book to board fares better.


Joe Abercrombie's universe would be better suited to adaptation.

I did. I saw it before I'd read the book. It was a bit of a slow burn but I enjoyed it enough to buy the novel which I enjoyed a great deal more.

Gender balance is important but I absolutely think Childermass should have been ahead of John Segundus. He's arguably the most interesting character in the book.

I watched the BBC series a couple of years ago or so. I gave up before the final episode, because I tired of very pompous characters pontificating about English magic. I watch a fair amount of BBC shows (but not Dr. Who), but this one grew intolerable. I don't think that the show seems like a good match for a board game, but maybe the book is better in that regard. We will probably get a thinly-themed procedural board game of unremarkable quality.

You should stay away from the novel with great haste. It's all that, plus footnotes that rival or exceed Infinite Jest.

I thought the novel was excellent, and enjoyed the series quite a bit. I don't know that it will translate into a game very well.

Ok, they have my attention. I hope it's a real game. They did War of the Rings and have an impressive pedigree.
