Hellboy was created by Wetworks

Inspired by the legendary tales of horror, myth and folklore by Mike Mignola, Hellboy: The Board Game is a fully cooperative experience for 1 to 4 players. You become a member of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defence (BPRD), ready to investigate occult threats that threaten our very existence.

The kickstarter for the 1-4 player co-op Hellboy game starts this Wednesday (rumored at 12pm pst).

From reading about it, it's a mix of Mansions of Madness (investigation focused) and Warhammer: Silver Tower (same designer, James Hewitt). I've never backed a Mantic project before but this is ticking all the right boxes for me so far.

James Hewitt's thoughts on Hellboy vs. Silver Tower

Lots of dev blogs on Hellboy

I just read all of the library editions of Hellboy, or almost everything, and I don't know if I can resist this. It looks like a $100 game. Few boardgames could not be improved with Mike Mignola art.

Those Hellboy mins look amazing. I don't have the skill to paint that well, so hopefully they are pre-painted. The Mignola art looks amazing on that location map/board. But hearing that this is designed by the same guy who did Silver Tower is not an auto-sell. Silver Tower is fun but flawed, and I don't think enough time has passed for this guy to do something sufficiently different from Silver Tower. Too bad it's a Kicksucker, because I may experience regret later for not backing this.

It took a lot of soul searching to release I don’t really like Hellboy. I know it’s not the done thing, but there it is.

DC was going to approve a single 15 minute interview with Mike Mignola about the art for this game, the new omnibus, and basically whatever except for the films, which he can't talk about. I had the opportunity to handle the interview but had to pass, because I don't know shit about comics or who Mike Mignola is.

However, I'm down for this game because of James Hewitt.

I love Hellboy, and I love his supporting characters. But that doesn't mean I want to play a game about Hellboy. I can easily pass.

I find the F:ATtie fondness for James Hewitt to be a bit... Surprising?

Surprising as in; I've read little praise for him before on this site.

If y'all like James' work, may I strongly encourage you play DreadBall! He was instrumental in the first edition's development, and had a few pointers for the second edition as well.

As some may know, I'm a volunteer for Mantic Games. I got to lay my hands on Hellboy stuff at Adepticon. I can report that the components are very nice. The Walking Dead was a big leap in Mantic's quality, and I think Hellboy may surpass it.

I'm a big fan of Mike's sensibility, and that should ring clear in the game artwork. I'm a little disappointed the miniatures don't have the same stylization as the comics. A hard contrast in a miniature's sculpt would have been counterpoint to everything else on the market. Instead, the minis (while very nice) are just "more of the same."

And yet, Hellboy doesn't do much for me. It should. All of its individual components I find appealing. But the sum product / IP just doesn't capture me. Further, as much as I like the game design of Hewitt, I think I'm done with co-ops. At least for a while.

IMO, Mike's best work was his adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula.

We've discussed Hewitt a few times regarding Gorechosen and Silver Tower. Dude's got great design sensibilities.

I'm... unimpressed with the design in its current state and aspects of the rules and reasoning behind the numbers of some of the minis is still totally unclear. The delivery timelines are ludicrous. This has a bad smell to it, honestly. It reminds me a lot of the cluelessness that was on display during the Dark Souls campaign.

Has anyone played the new Hellboy game?
I am curious if it is worth picking up.

Yes, I really dig Hellboy. It's James Hewitt and Sophie Williams so it should be no surprise.

It's a dungeon crawler with fighting and plenty of frog minions to plow through (it follows the first Hellboy issue), but there's a neat investigative mechanism that the whole thing is framed around where you collect clues. Every scenario leads to a big fight with a boss (again, following the comics framework), and the clue tokens you've gained soften the thing.

Boss' are driven by an AI deck, and you're trying to track down as many of those clues as possible before the doom track fills. There's some branching story paths as each scenario is comprised of a small deck of cards with different triggers that have you flip and reveal new events, it's very well done although replayability is not very strong. I have replayed existing scenarios though and found them enjoyable.

The characters are fantastic. Each has their own set of varied asymmetrical abilities and equipment. Hellboy can throw people or punch them and send them flying, damaging other enemies they collide with. Liz Sherman has a meter where you you can try and control your pyro ability and maximize damage output, although she can leave inferno tokens around the map which can harm your own characters as well as the bad guys. Abe Sapien is a badass as well and can throw his harpoon or utilize it in melee.

It's a neat game, although sadly there's a ton of content in the deluxe Kickstarter version (which is $200! at Miniature Market). I have the retail edition and I'm trying to determine if I want to hang onto it long term.

I was under embargo until last Friday so couldn't say much about it. I'm hoping to get my full G&S review up soon, but that place has gone down the toilet since Teri Litorco left so I have no idea when that will happen.

Concerning Cthulhu Wars - yes, use the Cthulhu buff. We've played over 10 games with it (that errata has been available for awhile). It's a big help and that faction is nasty now, but not too overpowered.

Thanks.

I am a fan of the comics and movies.

Looking at the $200 version, I am wondering if there is enough there to justify the cost.
