2) Dune
3) Clash of Cultures
I don't actually like the genre that much, so those are the only three I've played enough to honestly call them favorites.

Chaos in the Old World
Warrior Knights
Cyclades
TI3
Game of Thrones
Star Trek Ascendancy is closing fast on this list. Just haven't quite played enough of it yet. Other near misses: Dune (needs the right group), Runewars (hero actions never quite important enough despite their constant presence in the game), Revolt on Antares (the best of the old TSR minigames), Shogun/Samurai Swords/Ikusa (just needs a bit more chrome; there's a great random event deck file on BGG), Supremacy (if you have all the expansions and, say, 10 hours or so, it's a blast.)

Shit, I forgot Struggle of Empires. I think I was mentally limiting myself to you know, games with actual plastic dudes. But SoE rocks .

Nexus Ops (my fave: simple and sweet)
Chaos in the Old World
(Brief) History of the World
People are listing Mare Nostrum, which I like, but I don't think of that as DOAM at all. There's dudes, and a map, but the trading is where it's at.

But I will play (and enjoy) these...
Nexus Ops
Risk Legacy
Struggle of Empires/Conquest of the Empire (bidding for alliances is incredible, even if I don't play much anymore)
Monsters Menace America (dumb and silly, which I like, and I don't mind the endgame)
1812: Invasion of Canada (team game, which is cool)
Also, I'm not a fan, but Risk Europe is a hit in my group.

Games with an area-level map--often global, sometimes more specific--on which you place your dudes in an area and try to use them to take important areas from someone else.

Not to split hairs, but one of the victory conditions is to take and hold the special cities, and the way we play a lot of the game is taking and trying to hold other player's resource generation areas.

1. Risk Legacy (replaced both Risk 'revised,' and Risk 2210.)
2. Risk Star Wars The Original Trilogy (note: this is ideal for 3 players only.)
3. Cthulhu Wars (though I must say, there's a lot of independent bloat going on. I've yet to scratch the surface.)
4. Nexus Ops (shorter, sweeter. I'm referring to the AH print.)
5. Blood Rage (shorter than CW, sweeter than CitOW.)

Small World
War of the Ring
Those are the only ones I own if we're not counting 4x stuff. War of the Ring is just a doorstop at this point so I should probably get rid of it. I prefer tactical skirmish games or coop dungeon crawls for 2-player nowadays.

I'm not in the right frame of mind to do something as brutal as pick only five, maybe later ...
I'm also a bit dubious on some selections but the definition is a bit open (looking at the definition and the selections seen so far I reckon most of my collection qualifies)
