Read this excerpt of a review on Polygon... this thing looks really cool. I love 1st ed art and even some classic AD+D works for me.

Any of you guys seen this thing?

I got this for the holidays and consumed it in like a single day.  It is *extremely* good and I highly recommend it.  It's a little weak once they round the corner into 3.5 and 4, because you can tell that since Wizards bought them and many of the employees are the same they have to kid glove many of the events of the past ten to twenty years and sing the absolute praises of Wizards as a company and the buyout.

So many thoughts about it...

-Dave Trampier is the MVP of this whole thing.  His stuff is so good, so pathbreaking.
-I knew Trampier was good before I read the book, but I did not know Erol Otus as well.  Also amazing stuff.
-It is really striking that once Wizards buys the company it is like...  man, maybe we shouldn't just make every single character white or a woman without a shirt.  I feel like it suggests the type of old boys club TSR must have been.
-what a disaster the 4th edition and to a lesser extent the Wizards 3.0 edition transition was in terms of art design.  I've cooled quite a bit on the Elmore era or whatever, but at least it was iconic and interesting.  The 2000s to 2010s stuff has not aged well at all.

I had a bunch of other stuff I thought while reading it but those were the first ones.  Anyway, the book is really, really good, especially the first 3/4 of it.

I got this for Christmas as well. It is fascinating. It will take me a long time to get through it; it is enormous. Highly recommended!
