Got a Deadlands question for any fans or those familiar with the game. I'm thinking of picking up Hell on Earth Reloaded for the Savage Worlds system. Is that a decent place to jump in or would it be best to start with another core book in the timeline? All tips and knowledge bombs welcome and thanks in advance.

I've owned and read a few editions of Deadlands and have played in two sessions, one as a gm and one as a player.
The current Savage Worlds edition is certainly the best playing, though the original game had mechanics that are certainly unique and maybe more fitting to the setting. I think the SW edition even has those little Explorer's Edition versions you can buy for a fraction of the price of the hardbacks.
As far as the timeline, I've only dabbled in the old west era of the game. I've never touched Hell on Earth. For me, there's a lot of cool things in Deadlands (and I almost mentioned it in my favorite universes to game in), but there's just too much. I think they went a step or two too far when deciding what concepts and ideas they were going to include. Had they toned it down just a bit I'd probably still be playing it. Hell on Earth looked to take what was already too much and multiply it up. I passed.

Gracias, Senor Blanco! I'm watching Hell on Earth Reloaded and if it goes on sale I'll scoop it up. I don't mind an overload of options and concepts. I can can always cherry pick what's there and drop the rest. I've been playing Borderlands, watching Fury Road, and reading Apocalypse World so I am in a mood for some weird west post-apocalypse gaming and this might do the trick. I should give Apocalypse World a spin but it seems so bare bones I'm not sure my players would dig it for the long haul. There is definitely some good stuff for the GM in there though; stuff like building fronts and all the principles are pure gold. I suppose a good tie breaker might be the decision to rely on minis and make the game more skirmish based since Savage Worlds handles that very well.
