I'm a big fan of James Wallis for all his work he's done in the RPG field. I've been aware of his card game 'Once Upon a Time' for a while, but know little about it. I'm wondering if it would be good with kids to help them string together cohesive stories or at least help be creative piecing tales together. Is it a good game? Should we just get a simple RPG?

Ha! Fantastic!

I haven't been successful sending Lee a pm for some reason, so let me know if you don't get mine (just sent). Also, let me know if I need to cover shipping or anything.

My son is going into 4th grade next year which is fairly writing intensive. I'm hoping something like this will help the creative and descriptive juices flowing in preparation for being able to tell a story.

The most fun I had with Once Upon a Time is when a friend and I used the cards to tell a collaborative story, ignoring the game aspect entirely. That was a good time. The "game" part sucks.

Rory's story cubes might be worth a look as well, basically dice with pictures on them. The idea being, you roll the dice and try to come up with a story that incorporates the elements pictured. It completely bounced off my kid, though, so I dunno.

I guess I should be more helpful. The next time you order from Amazon, throw Basic Fantasy in your cart for a whopping $4.50

www.amazon.com/Basic-Fantasy-Role-Playin...id=1456244671&sr=8-1

If you don't have any polyhedral dice, throw those in too for another $4.

You'll both be telling stories for the rest of your lives.

Got your PM and it has shipped. Don't worry about the shipping cost. Just pay it forward or support the Fort.

Anyone who is really fun to play this game with would be even more fun playing an RPG with. Go with quozl's advice, except that you can download all the basic fantasy stuff for free if you want to check it out first. The guy publishes it at cost just to get it out there. And it has a really good fan community.

My kids liked it. I am going to try Fiasco with them next. My oldest son left behind a huge, intimidating stack of Pathfinder. This basic fantasy RPG looks much more manageable. Who am I kidding, I can't even make myself read the rules for Android: Netrunner.

I hear y'all on rpgs, but the hope is this is something we can play as a family. The wife and the 5 year old (maybe with some assistance).

I think if I ever get the feeling the family wants to rpg I'm going for that Lone Wolf Adventure Game.

Still, I may buy that basic rpg for a few bucks just to flip through and support the guy.
