Bugs: Recent Topics Paging, Uploading Images & Preview (11 Dec 2020)
Recent Topics paging, uploading images and preview bugs require a patch which has not yet been released.
Let's Talk Sega Genesis Games
I have no idea how long the Wii virtual console side of my Wii U will be up and running and wondering if I should pull down some classics sooner rather than later.
Never had a Genesis though, so need a little guidance... Streets of Rage will be a must (particularly part 2), but what else? Which is the best of the Shinobi titles? Rolling Thunder?
EDIT: I'm not going to get into any lengthy rpgs...so Shining Force and such are out.
Here's the list of Genesis games on the Wii virtual console: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Virtual_Co...rica%29#Sega_Genesis

Revenge of Shinobi is fantastic.
Road Rash 2
You've already mentioned Streets of Rage II, which is the best in the series.
Golden Axe is a good version but you'll get so good at it that it will pose no challenge whatsoever.
Micro Machines is some great multiplayer.
Gunstar Heroes is pretty great
Eternal Champions if you have the 6 button controllers and a worthy opponent

For some platform jumping besides Sonic Dynamite Headdy is very cool.
Galaxy Force II is a great SHMUP.
Beyond Oasis and Landstalker are the action RPGs that are certainly worth your time.
Personally i love the Wonder Boy series. Quirky mix of Zelda and Adventure Island (Nes). Monster World IV has a particularly strong adventure element.
Also be sure to at least try some of the Sega Master System games. They really have a certain kind of charm on their own.

The Genesis version paled in comparison to the arcade version. I dropped a lot of quarters on that one at the Tilt in the mall of Cedar Rapids, IA.

First up, avoid the tempting arcade ports. Like Galaxy Force II and Super Thunder Blade. This was a time when arcade ports were still janky and not as good in general. Note that I am talking about Wii U/Wii VC ports of the Genesis versions. The 3DS ones are arcade perfect.
I would really suggest the Sega Genesis Collection to get these (WAY cheaper than getting them on VC), but it's not on Wii or Wii U. It has just about everything except for the Treasure games.
That said, #1 and #2 out of these is Gunstar Heroes and Alien Soldier. Gunstar Heroes is Contra gone bananas. It's one of my favorite games of the era. Total mayhem, great co-op, and one level is a board game. Alien Soldier is another Treasure (literally). It's nuts. It's a side-scrolling action game/shooter, but the levels are super short. Like, three screens worth. And then a big, major boss fight. So it's like 26 (I think) boss fights with these micro-levels before them. Really unusual, really brilliant game.
Shinobi III (surfin' ninja!), Strider, Streets of Rage 2, Shadow Dancer, Ghouls and Ghosts...the Wonder Boy/Monster World games. These are the usual suspects for a good reason.
Gain Ground is WEIRD. It's kind of great...I think. Sonic is hugely overrated, I think I actually don't like them.
The real goldmine on VC, however, is the Turobografx-16 collection.

Nevertheless, I have some absolute dears here.
I'm a big fan of the original Bareknuckles/Streets of Rage. Many people prefer the second, but I really like the first for atmosphere and that police car super attack.
And of course the Strike series! Semi sandbox map with real world hardware (with fantasy capabilities:p) But it was cool as fuck.
I thought so too, until my brother played it. Back then he was able to draw the stages. Seeing him play is pure joy as he zipped through the stages/Sonic is hugely overrated, I think I actually don't like them.
